Vigil for slain turkey set for Sunday in San Rafael

A vigil for the famed turkey struck and killed by a motorist in Gerstle Park is set for Sunday in San Rafael.

"Our beloved town pet was struck by a car and passed away Tuesday evening," said Rene Arias, a Gerstle Park resident. "For those of us that will miss him and would like to get together to say goodbye and share stories we are holding a town vigil."

The bird had become a fixture in the neighborhood after dwelling there for about a year and a half, and became well-known for his vanity, healthy appetite and dissatisfaction with motorists. Since news of the bird's death, the neighborhood has expressed outrage over the incident, in which a black Toyota pickup truck was believed to have been seen deliberately running down the bird on Tuesday during a rainstorm, according to an eyewitness. Animal cruelty is punishable by a fine of up to $20,000 and a year in jail.

But it's not clear the turkey's death was a deliberate act.

FTA:”A vigil for the Gerstle Park turkey is set for 3 p.m. Sunday near the tennis courts in the picnic area in Gerstle Park. Attendees are encouraged to share turkey stories and pictures.”

JMHO. Californios go berserk when a well known animal dies. There was a white deer seen often in Mission Valley in San Diego in the 70’s, and when it died the people’s lament was louder than when Jack Murphy passed.

We’ve had a “wild” turkey wandering the yards in our neighborhood every spring for the last 3 years. She has a brood of about 8 chicks, and the gang is cute for about 15 minutes. They poop everywhere, and I’m glad to see them leave. Guess I’m not the Marin County type.

I see about forty or fifty wild turkeys nearly every week here in the Santa Cruz mountains. They’re very cool, and they “gobble” on cue.

I’ll bring the stuffing if you bring the cranberry sauce.

"Why did the turkey cross the road?"
Oh...you mean it didn't make it?...OK...try again.

"Why did the turkey try to cross the road?"
