Peter Gabriel has stunned the music world by announcing he won't be joining his former Genesis bandmates onstage for the group's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in March.
In fact, the Sledgehammer hitmaker isn't sure he'll even attend the ceremony in New York.
Fans were hoping the induction would lead to a reunion for the band's original line-up, but Gabriel insists he has no plans of teaming up with Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks, who reformed as Genesis in 2008 for a world tour.
Gabriel tells Rolling Stone magazine, "Im definitely not going to sing. I learned at our last reunion (in 1982) that you cant just get up there. You have to rehearse."
And his upcoming European tour plans might rule out an appearance: "Im trying to find a way to do it... If I can work it out, Ill go."
The rocker refuses to completely rule out a reunion in the future, but admits another get together seems highly unlikely.

DARN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BUMMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He’s going to stay home and “Shock” his Monkey.
I know I'm gonna get flamed big time for saying this but it's the MTV hit-making trio that most people visualize when they think of Genesis, not the art-rock band with the crazy costumes that Gabriel fronted a decade earlier.
On a sadly related note, I've read that a back injury has ended Collins' ability to play drums.
Hopefully Steve Hackett will make it. But it also sounds that Phil can no longer play drums because of his back issues.
I enjoyed the Gabriel-era stuff, but IMHO the first two post-Gabriel albums, were Genesis’ best, outside of “The Lamb”. And Seconds Out was a great live album. It was when Hackett left that Genesis started to go downhill.
Maybe they can rehash the Trick of the Tail tour with Bill Bruford on drums and Phil upfront and Hackett on guitar.
Good. I’m sorry. They were genuinely boring.
Phil Collins did some listenable stuff solo.
Otherwise, there really wasn’t much talent or creativity there. Sorry.
WOW!!!!!! That was grreatttt!!! Really enjoyed that thanks!!!! HE HAS STILL GOT IT!!!
What memories. BIG ASS SMILE :-)
I totally agree. Trick of the Tail and Wind n Wuthering were the last great albums. And Then There Were Three was good but it started a long trip downhill imo.
The man is a genius and a perfectionist.
Collins issued a statement with regards to that:
0.09.09 Statement from Phil Collins
10 September 2009
In the UK press today, there appeared some articles about Phil’s physical state, with some slightly misleading headlines. Here, in Phil’s own words, are how he describes his situation:
“There isn’t any drama regarding my ‘disability’ and playing drums.
Somehow during the last Genesis tour I dislocated some vertebrae in my upper neck and that affected my hands. After a successful operation on my neck, my hands still can’t function normally.
“Maybe in a year or so it will change, but for now it is impossible for me to play drums or piano. I am not in any ‘distressed’ state, stuff happens in life.”
Phil
We are glad to hear of Phil’s positive attitude, and wish him continued rest and recuperation during this time.

You mean when Genesis actually became commercially successful? lol. I love that argument when metal or progressive bands finally make it and get recognized they all of a sudden went down hill or sold out or went too commercial. Let us not forget the brilliant albums like Duke, Abacab, Genesis, And Then There Were Three,Invisible Touch (which contains a ton of great material like Domino, Anything She Does, The Brazilian, Land of Confusion etc..) people love to pin the pop label on them for that record and there were oodles of ballads and what not but it was miles better than We Can’t Dance.
Let’s not forget Phil’s solo work from the 80s...damn near flawless.
Where is Steve Hackett?
I like both old and new Genesis and don’t see them as mutually exclusive. The latter period Genesis and Phil Collins solo work is certainly better than anything Gabriel has produced on his own. I mean Sledgehammer? That is one lame boring song with almost no chords. All skin and no meat.
<I know I’m gonna get flamed big time for saying this but it’s the MTV hit-making trio that most people visualize when they think of Genesis,
No flame from me. I think you’re absolutely right. I think Gabriel is almost a musical genius and really appreciate his work, but when I think ‘Genesis,’ I think Phil Collins - and I’m not even in the MTV demographic.
His third album “Security” (the one with ‘Shock the Monkey’) was way ahead of its time.
I’ll check it out. But just being ahead of its time doesn’t necessarily mean much in my book since music has deteriorated in many ways since the 60s/70s. I guess one could find one of the earliest rappers that were ahead of their time but rap is still crap as is Sledgehammer.
The irony, of course, is that Gabriel himself had no trouble churning out radio-friendly hits and groundbreaking MTV videos as a solo artist, achieving alongside his former Genesis bandmates a level of worldwide popularity that eluded both of them when they played together.
