US Economic Collapse Survial Map!
Economic Vindicator! ^ | 1-26-10 | James

Where is the best place to live in the country in the event of economic collapse? A US Army veteran employs to use of computer graphics and a host of social-economic-environmental factors to share his conclusions....which are fairly obvious!

Cool. I could load up my boat and head north through the Mobile Bay delta where there is plenty of fresh water, vegetation, and game.

You can actually look at places where economies *have* collapsed to see how people will behave, such as Weimar Germany, Zimbabwe, North Korea, and Argentina.

It's unlikely to get worse than what those people saw.

Moreover, a large collapse will be at least somewhat incremental...you'd see one area fall before another...and be able to learn how people are going to react to this new crisis.

But other than the above, most of the apocalyptic fantasy is that suddenly we are free men again...with no burdensome government and corporate rules...living as rugged individuals instead of as a collective.

A pleasant fantasy, but the experiences of Zimbabwe and Argentina suggest different realities.

If I remember correctly, from my inferior public school system history, quite a few people were able to survive in areas north of the frost line well before public utilities were available. My parents property backs up against the River of No Return Wilderness area in North Idaho. Plenty of water, plenty of game, plenty of wood for a cabin and a cozy fire, and very few people.

While I prefer the comfort of S. TX I can certainly imagine surviving close to the Canadian Border without any problems.

I'm not so sure. With our relience on national trucking and food distribution, the national electric grid and with such widespread use of credit cards and electronic banking -- I think it's possible that it would all come crashing down at once.

So is the Okefenokee Swamp. Some places are sparsely populated for darn good reasons, and swamps rank high on that list.

This guy seriously over estimates the problems of the frost line. I would much rather try to survive a Southern Illinois winter, than try to survive a summer in a malaria infested Florida swamp.

Have you ever noticed that they don't do "Survivor Man" shows about the American Midwest. It just isn't that interesting or hard. Find/build a good shelter, lay in firewood, and you are good to go.

The movies tell me that you'd both better be practicing head shots if you want to keep the contents of your craniums.

NOLA is on his map?

I think it’s already been established that you don’t want to be there during a collapse.

I think he avoids the immediate area around NOLA because of population, but he does seem to recommend swampland in the middle of Florida.

Er, good luck with that.

Here's a website that talks a lot about where to go post-collapse.

http://www.survivalblog.com/retreatareas.html

His top 10 states:

1 Idaho
2 Montana
3 Oregon
4 Washington
5 Wyoming
6 Utah
7 South Dakota
8 North Dakota
9 Arizona
10 Colorado

The analysis given is wrong and does not account for water borne diseases such as malaria which would become a serious problem. One of the reasons the pilgrims landed in Massachusetts was that it was north of the area that was known to harbor water borne diseases and the Massachusetts had one twentieth the number of deaths from water borne diseases of the Cheasapeake area.

The analysis presented might kill you.

If SHTF, I am heading North for this reason.

I live in AR, which is among the areas he listed as good. A friend of mine at church has a cabin I know about and I briefly considered it since it was near a river and thus there’d be a steady supply of fish, but almost everyone at church knows about it and I’m sure he’d have his own plans for it in such an event.

I’ve settled on either making a run for Texas or going up to the Buffalo River. I need to learn a bit about both before I make up my mind.

I'll be heading for the hills.....no, wait......I already live there! :-)

Just an FYI, Jack Spirko, creator of TheSurvivalPodcast.com, who lives in the Dallas/Fort Worth area bought land here in Arkansas 25-30 miles from me a few years ago as his bugout location, and is in the process of moving here (if he hasn't already) permanently.
