Part of CD planning in the 70’s was “Local Survival”.

And I live in a reasonably defendable small town. Not off the beaten path, per se, but not your first route choice.

We figured in the 70’s we’d have 48-72 hours to plan before the first Chicago refugees started showing up.

And about a week before the thugs showed up following them, after the urban area had been pillaged.

More than enough time to organize local resources.

Economic Collapse!? Economic Collapse?

Can't happen! After all we have the Far-left National Socialist wing of the Democrat Party in charge – they have this economic thing sew up tighter that Nanci Pelosi’s face. /Industrial grade sarcasm

Ahem, anyways I've been considering this issue and one thing I'm wondering is what is the best type of venue for survival?
Meaning what type of ‘retreat’ situation should one favor:

Small family group 2 – 10 family members

Small group of friends – 10 -20 people or 2-3 families

Medium sized group - 30 – 40 people.

Small, close knit town – 100 – 200 people

The assumption with each of these scenarios that each member of these groups be at least competent with guns and other survival skills – or at least won't scream, wet their pants and run away if they spot a gun.

the stuff you can pick up in a forest - won't keep a cabin warm for a week - especially if others are also gathering

Comfortably warm, no, keep you from freezing probably. With a group, and survival is best done as a group activity not an individual sport. You can cut enough wood to cook a meal and keep one room above freezing.

Look at the houses from the homesteaders. One room around a fireplace, or much better a cast iron stove. A fire place is very inefficient for heating. It wasn't that they couldn't build bigger houses. It was that if you built a big house, you had to heat a big house. Get an extended family in one home and you have enough arms to cut the wood, you can optimize your food preparation, and you have enough rifles in close proximity to keep what you have.

Well aren’t you silly. Just go to firewood.com and place your order.
Expect one week for delivery.

Perfect!! Thanks for the tip!

Now....all I need is a fireplace!

I've been considering this issue and one thing I'm wondering is what is the best type of venue for survival?

It depends on where you are. If you are in a farm community your main concern is holding on to what you already have and keeping the Obamazombies from looting your seed grain. So in that case you need the small close community in order to have enough people for patrols, mount fixed defense, and to do the farming.

If you are like me and live in an area that will become decidedly unpleasant in the SHTF scenario, you want the small family group, so you can throw all your stuff in a couple of cars and try to get out of town ahead of the Obamazombies.

Now like i said the best group to be in is a reinforced infantry division sitting on a base with your dependents surrounded with multiple rows of razor wire, berms, and mine fields. A couple of years worth of ammo and MRE's stacked in the warehouses and you are all ready for a vacation to beautiful Armageddon. One in which the only question is weather it is better to use 155mm howitzers or 25mm bushmasters to break up concentrations of Obamazombies.

Well we are in an ample rain and low population area but it does freeze here. Not usually too many days below 35º but enough of them.

If the government learns you have supplies you will be called a hoarder and they will take them.

Good point – if you can, buy with cash and without any form of a “shopper's saving card” or whatever.

Think of buying food the same way you think of buying ammo.

Since we're on this topic, check out an interesting program on the History channel on this subject:

I'll admit from the get-go that the PC horse Schummer get thick in places - they come out being anti-gun and yet really contradict themselves with the unstated lesson that guns will be the key to everyone's survival.

All in all, a good thing to watch to get a good heads up on what would happen during a major collapse

What do you think about staying on a boat off the Jersey coast. That would give you the flexibility to move around off shore. Stock it with fresh water, and dried meats.

Depending on the size of the boat, that could hold you for a week or two, perhaps more. You're going to have to land sometime, though...and if the collapse happens during hurricane season, you might be in for a bumpy ride.

If you already have such a boat, it would be foolish not to use it as a resource in your disaster planning, but if you haven't bought it yet the funds might be better spent on an actual retreat.

Well, it appears that I've not been to the great Mall in quite a while.

I just went to their website, and couldn't find my garlic store! Can anyone on here confirm that it still exists?

If the store is gone, I'm not going there anymore!!

That sounds like the Idea situation – the thing I’m wondering about is what do you do if your like a lot of people living near a city in suburbia – do you bug out to somewhere unknown or do you shelter in place?

A lot of the doomsday scenarios assume that live will revert back to a “Simpler Time” where people grew their own food etc. - this after a lot of chaos of a collapse.

I am not sure that people would put up with this for any major length of time – they are used to having the convinces of life – electricity, running water, etc.

Unless the looters manage to destroy all the utility infrastructure, that will still be around, those things could come back on line.

It’s one thing to have lived before these conveniences– people didn’t know any better, but now people know what’s possible and they will want it back.

None of us have a crystal ball to see the future, but I think an Argentina style economic collapse is MUCH more likely than a total TEOTWAWKI collapse, with armies of biker zombies ala Mad Max.

A modern society is a pretty hardy weed and isn't easy to kill. It can get REALLY bad, we may lose our freedom, we might be hungry, but I don't see a total collapse to prehistoric levels. And if that happens, I'd rather sail off to the South Seas, than hang around walking on "The Road" fighting off cannibals.

Fernando Aguirre's "Modern Survival Manual," based on the Argentine scenario of economic collapse. Amazon link.

Depends on what the author means by "Economic Collapse".

If the author means a Mad Max decline leading to something near biblical apocalypse then this analysis is far too shallow. In fact I would say that these areas that he has selected may be the absolute worst in that type of situation.

To best understand how to "get along with nothing" its best to ask those who actually did. There are reasons that "cold" was not one of the four horsemen but "pestilence" and "famine" were. The author needs to put more thought into what these terms mean and how they arrive before he goes on to plan Thunderdome.

Other lesser scenarios like "The Slightly Greater Depression" are going to present themselves in a manner that make entirely different concerns more prominent and require a different focus in preps and preplanning.

In the short term you have to bug out. The Obamazombies are going to come out of the urban areas and loot everything within easy reach. Lets call that a 3 hour drive. If you are inside that area, and have anything of value, it is either going to get looted by the corrupt Obama pseudo government warlords, or by the gangs.

Now if you are going to run, you need to run early. Farmers are planners, and despite what the MSM will have you believe farmers aren't dumb. Now the first thing they are going to realize is that anything that increases travel time between them and the nearest city will make them safer. Farmers have fertilizer, and diesel fuel for their equipment. The combination of the two will allow them to remove highway bridges. Since most street gangs lack engineering companies with bridging equipment this will stop the gangs quite nicely. However it will also trap you in with the street gangs. And that is a situation that you most definitely want to avoid.

Ssshhh, keep it quiet!

I am about a year away from moving to the BI, from the most crowded one. What you write is quite true, just need to hold on for a bit longer to retire, sell house, and move.

Had to laugh at the suggestion that Hawaii is so gun-restrictive. It is not. You do need to register, but the restrictions are limited to pistol magazine size. Own as many as you want. The widely reported AR magazine size restriction is also widely ignored. Go to the Koko Head range some Sunday, and count the AR's with 20-30 rd magazines. Cops don't care.

My personal rifle would not be legal in Calif. at all: a DPMS LR-308, with 6 legal 20 rd magazine, compensator, collapsible stock, etc. Restrictive my ass............

Well, personally, I think the main reason the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth was it was N of the limit of their charter corporation’s authority (New York?). So they were therefore not bound by the contract of their corporate sponsors. Of course “officially” it was because they could not get S past the shoals off Cape Cod.
