GILBERT, Ariz. (AP) -- With a police lieutenant mortally wounded and his alleged assailants fleeing in a work truck, more than 50 law officers sped after them in a wild midnight pursuit from the Phoenix suburbs into the nearby mountains.

It was a highly dangerous endeavor. The suspects fired shots at the police cars from the speeding truck, and even tossed out wrenches, other tools and an air compressor tank during the 50-mile chase, police said. A half-dozen police cruisers were disabled after hitting debris or being struck by bullets.

But the two men in the truck were never able to lose the officers, whose numbers continued to grow even as damaged law enforcement vehicles dropped out and the officers inside hitched rides with fellow pursuers.

The chase ended near the small mountain mining community of Superior as violently as it began. The suspects jumped out and opened fire on police before falling to the ground in a hail of bullets....

Everything I have heard about this officer is that he was one terrific cop. Everyone had a lot of respect and affection for him. May God hold him close and comfort his family.

Phoenix PD carries .40 caliber with the option to carry any Glock .40 or .45. Many cars are equipped with patrol rifles as well.

A police officer that does not render first aid after securing the suspect is in danger of violating the suspect’s Constutional rights.

They are mandated to provide what aid they can.

So you’re saying they just can’t shoot?

Please regale everyone with your experience of high speed pursuits and shooting armed suspects under pressure...

Its sad, in one thread about a copy using deadly force you argue that a cop can shoot anyone he considers the slightest threat. Not being properly submissive for example.

This case of a tragic death you whine about how cops have to provide first aid to the people they shoot.

If you really hate being a cop why don’t you quit and do something you’re more qualified for?

But you’re right, being in combat is so much different than a high speed pursuit and shooting under pressure. I mean that whole going home after work makes it much more intense.

I concur. Cops do make an effort to provide first aid. They get around to calling EMS eventually. Who are we kidding? This Lt. Co-workers were in no hurry to help. Nor are they obligated.
I’ve worked in law enforcement for a long time. Rarely do cops get bloody. Especially for someone that killed one of their own.

Hence my comment about calling for paramedics.

Honestly I don’t blame them in this case.

In a related story:

An illegal alien in Polk County Florida who got pulled over in a routine> traffic stop ended up ‘executing’ the deputy who stopped him. The deputy> was shot eight times, including once behind his right ear at close range.> Another deputy was wounded and a police dog killed. A state-wide manhunt> ensued..>> The murderer was found hiding in a wooded area and as soon as he took a> shot at the SWAT team, officers opened fire on him. They hit the guy 68> times.> Naturally, the liberal media went nuts and asked why they had to shoot the> poor undocumented immigrant 68 times.>> Sheriff Grady Judd told the Orlando Sentinel: ‘Because that’s all the> ammunition we had.’

Oh, and the Coroners statement;

The Coroner also reported that the illegal alien died of natural causes. When asked by a reporter how that could be since there were 68 bullet wounds in his body, he simply replied “when you are shot 68 times you are naturally gonna die.”

THAT is the way it should be!

Yep, that took place about 30 miles from my house. They have many many illegals in that area. A few years ago they had marches for the illegals.

I’ve hunted hog in the type of brush they were in looking for that guy. You can’t see more than 4-5 feet in many places. Sometimes you can’t even see your feet.

Are the attackers illegal aliens?

Legal. Illegal. Doesn't really make any difference to the dead cop, does it?

We need to close the borders, deport illegals, and declare a moratorium on immigration. Gee, how long have we been singing that tune? All during the Bush administration, I believe.
