I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have the guts to pull someone away from sharks actively feeding.

Me neither! Particularly on a board and not in a boat.

I’ve been in the water when sharks are nearby. All you can see is the teeth.

An ignorant question: What is it about wind surfing that makes one more likely to be attacked by sharks? How would that make you more vulnerable than regular board surfing?

This guy was kite surfing and when the kites aren’t pulling, you sit in the water much like someone waiting to waterski. Much easier target to chomp.

Often times if the wind is good, a kite surfer can go 30 feet in the air and slam back down to the water. Perhaps he startled a shark or two when he hit the water? Hell I don’t know..
Fascinating sport to watch though.

Not being up to date on water sports, I thought one needed a power boat to get the kite to lift one off the water. What am I missing here. If there was a boat, why didn’t they rescue him? I know, I know, I’m being a pest, but I’ve always wanted to know everything, and I won’t live long enough to know all there is to know. Bummer.

There is no boat involved. Where there is a boat, its kite fishing.(That was a joke).
Kite surfing involves a large kite and a harness that the surfer wears. The wind blows the kite and the surfer is basically dragged by the kite. Its done solo and is dangerous. I’ve seen/heard of people getting carried into roadways or get slammed against buildings.
You are at the mercy of the wind basically.

PS. Do a google image search of kite surfing. You’ll get the idea.

I heard this on the news this morning and was hoping the lifeguard would be hailed as a hero, but they didn’t even report his name.
