Only around one hundred enemy troops manage to break out of the 'motti' before its final destruction.
- Northern Finland: the Russian Dolin ski brigade launches a counterattack in Kuhmo.
- Central Isthmus: enemy artillery, aircraft and assault tanks shell the Finnish positions in Summa and Lähde.
- Only in Summa village does the Soviet infantry attempt an advance, using its overwhelming superiority in numbers in an attempt to exhaust the Finnish troops, who are forced to fight and sleep in the open in temperatures of almost 30 degrees below zero.
- At 1 o'clock in the afternoon, Moscow's propaganda radio announces that Finland is continuing to hound its workers, with "officer devils" spurring their troops on to burn and loot working-class homes.
- The Finnish Army is unable to find any more reserves or transfer those it has in time to cover areas where the Russians are threatening to break through.
- Eastern Isthmus: Taipale enjoys its quietest night of the year. Less than 50 mortars are fired in 7th Division's sector.
- Helsinki: children, the elderly, and the disabled are to be compulsorily evacuated from the city. Those who do not leave voluntarily will be forcibly removed.
- Abroad: Paavo Nurmi and Taisto Mäki, the famous Finnish runners currently on a tour of the USA, attend a flag-raising ceremony in the Finnish pavilion at the New York World's Fair.

Really? What’s his name? Good one.
BTW, for those with TCM access, the movie network is now running a 1943 movie called "Air Force." The scene on right now portrays a formation of B-17's flying from Hamilton Field to Hickam Field on Dec. 7 1941. Good B-17 shots.

"Priest Wins Fame with French Army – 6"
"White Father From Africa an Almost Legendary Figure as a Patrol Leader"MANY OF CLERGY FIGHTING
"Ministers of All Sects Liable for Active Service on same Basis as the Laity"
"WITH THE FRENCH ARMIES, in the field, Feb 3 -- A sector of the Lorraine front boasts of a patrol leader who is fast becoming legendary for dash, bravery and ascendancy over his ____ [illegible]. He is a White Father, a missionary in northern Africa.
"This correspondent has met more than one priest who has become an officer. there are many also in the ranks. This serves to recall that France, almost alone among nations, does not differentiate between ministers of religion and laymen in liability to military service in combat formation.
"In the World War 30,000 of the Catholic clergy, both regular and secular, joined the colors. When the armistice came they had won 16,000 citations, and of them 6,000 had been killed...
"From the Paris Diocese alone more than 500 priests are now serve at the front, including a colonel in the air force and at least one battalion commander. There are also proportionate numbers of Protestant ministers and rabbis...
Chaplains are not included in the figures, since they form a distinct category..."
Six thousand of 30,000 Catholic clergy who served killed in combat in the First World War. For the Second World War iirc, the numbers are in the hundreds rather than thousands. Still, can anyone imagine such a thing today?
