Sugar: The Bitter Truth
http://www.youtube.com ^ | July 30, 2009 | Robert H. Lustig, MD

Posted on 02/07/2010 11:33:11 AM PST by WackySam

Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, explores the damage caused by sugary foods. He argues that fructose (too much) and fiber (not enough) appear to be cornerstones of the obesity epidemic through their effects on insulin. Dr. Atkins was saying the same thing 40 years ago.

Not to worry...the Obama administration will control how much sugar and fiber we consume.

Huh?

I've read Dr. Atkin's books, and I never noticed ANY emphasis on fructose.

*ping* - apparently lots of people with either celiac disease or with gluten intolerance experience lots of difficulty with fructose.

Dr. Lustig's work is fascinating.

Big fan of Atkins.

But I also just read a book titled “Sugars that heal” That listed 8 essential sugars that the body needs. And while it said the human body was capable of converting any of the sugars to any of the 8 that it needs, it’s a chain process using enzymes that could be disrupted. It recommended adding Aloe and mushrooms, but not button mushrooms, to the diet, to ensure getting enough of the other sugars. It said the button mushrooms most commonly found in our grocery stores are devoid of nutrition.

We should go back to Aristotle and learn= “A life in moderation is a life well lived” an excess of anything is not a good thing...

There doesn't have to be because at least in the earliest phases, fruit is nearly verboten, except for berries like strawberries, which don't have much fructose to begin with.

For those who don't want to watch the hour and a half long video, they can read this synopsis. http://koreanforniancooking.blogspot.com/2010/02/sugar-vs-high-fructose-corn-syrup-whats.html

The poster whom I was replying to insinuated that Dr. Lustig’s work was worthless, that the information about fructose was already covered by Dr. Atkin long long long ago. I think not.

Funny thing is in American foods, sugar is in everything and almost impossible to avoid.I will not do soft drinks and the only sugared items I have is fruits. I have a friend that recently went diabetic and his wife was telling me it is very difficult to find food that he can readily eat. They have to avoid breads due to the wheat being highly enriched and same with white rice.

Corn syrup is almost in everything ! Very nasty stuff. Last Summer, I was extremely careful on the simple carbs plus doing a lot of bike riding, I was able to shed about 25 to 30 pounds. It was easy to do since my family was out of town for t

All processed foods are labeled with the sugar quantity.

It's easy to avoid sugar ~ simply avoid ALL starches which are normally the largest element in any diet. That way your body won't have any starch to convert to sugar so it'll have to convert protein or burn glycogen (made from fats).

Only if you're unaware that all simple sugars (glucose, sucrose, lactose, and fructose) are carbohydrates.
Dr. Atkins recommends that you restrict carbohydrates.

Singling out fructose would be redundant.

A very interesting presentation indeed, and I suspect he is really onto something here (although the idea isn’t really new). I just wish he would keep his politics out of his presentation. All things bad in this country can be traced back to one man (Richard Nixon)? Come on. At first, I thought he might be joking, but he was serious.

No, you are mistaken.

The original post to this messagethread is NOT about carbs in general, nor about sugar in general.

This thread is about FRUCTOSE, and about America's premier researcher into fructose, Dr. Lustig.

To simply IGNORE the original post, or to simply state that Dr. Atkins already did all this research is not merely inaccurate, it's ignorant of what was presented at the link.

If you ever interested in following the recent research into FRUCTOSE it turns out that starch foods like potatoes and white rice and corn meal -- all those olde fashioned food staples are fructose-FREE.

Dr. Lustig and Dr. Robert Johnson have done lots of research which has implicated the ONE sugar called fructose as the culprit behind obesity.
