(Vanity) Which do you recommend: Dish or Direct TV

Posted on 03/02/2010 7:49:55 PM PST by taxcutisapayraise

I'm in the process of selecting a satellite TV provider since I'll be moving soon when I buy a house. I found an old FR thread from 2003 on the topic of Direct TV vs. Dish TV. The market has changed since then.

I only have two TV locations. I don't need the premium channels, just the basics, especially Fox News.

Any suggestions and information will be appreciated.

Direct for sports...other than that there is little difference.

Yeah, don’t use either.

You’ll lose the signal when it rains and beware of the long term contracts. They lure you in with low rates and then throw in hidden charges.

Aren’t they both owned by the same conglomerate?

I’ve had both and I would recommend Direct TV hands down. It actually gives me a better signal in storms (Dish Network went out a lot more). Also, Direct TV always has some sort of promotion going on and existing customers can get it just for asking.

Wasn’t it Dish Network that had the All-0bama channel back during the election? You might want to consider that.

Direct is solid. You never lose the signal and you get more channels for less money than the hated Comcast. It is very good for sports and they have some decent specials from time to time. Pretty upfront about what you will pay if you stick it out. At least they don’t go up every six months like cable.

I think they tried to merge but were refused on grounds of anti-trust.

I have both. Dish goes out more in storms here in NJ then Direct. I am stuck in a contract with DirectTV or I would just have Dish as it is cheaper (I think). I could only get Direct in my summer trailer which I don't have any longer so it was either pay over $300 or finish the contact. When we get lots of rain Direct stays on & Dish goes out until the storm is over.

I switched from Dish to DTV abut two years ago. IMO DirecTV is far superior.

Direct tv is in my opinion much better.also when you call dish for service you can never understand the foreigners on the other end. When I go camping it’s much easier setting direct’s dish.

Both about the same quality. Stay away from DirecTV - if you get locked in a contract, they rake you over for termination fees, receiver fees, etc.

I got tired of fighting them and switched to Dish - so far so good

My mother-in-law (who lives way out in the country) has direct TV and it’s pretty good.

Keep in mind if you want free equipment and cheap service they sign you to a 2 year contract like a cell phone with big cancellation fees. I would rec Directv if you can get your own equipment

Neither. Netflix. Buying cable pours massive $$ into the pockets of the left.
