Troopers: Autopsy shows village teacher likely killed by wolves (Alaska)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- An autopsy conducted Thursday shows that wolves likely killed an itinerant teacher in the southwest Alaska village of Chignik Lake, according to the Alaska State Troopers.

Village residents found the body of Candice Berner, 32, a short distance from town on Monday.

Multiple injuries due to animal mauling caused Berner's death, trooper Col. Audie Holloway said, referencing a report from the state medical examiner's office.

Chignik Lake is in very rural Alaska (The Bush) - the village has been surrounded by a large wolf pack for some time. The woman killed (at <149 CM and under 50Kg) was a local special Ed teacher out running on a gravel road - wearing her iPod and not a 357 Mag.....

She didn't stand a chance, 3 or more 70 kg wolves attacked from behind. The autopsy showed she was still alive as the pack dragged her from the road to begin eating.

Another reason to 'dislike' the Greenies that love to tell Alaskans how to run the State. The Troopers are sending a chopper to "thin out" the wolf packs.

“the village has been surrounded by a large wolf pack for some time”

I recommend a full spread of depth charges.

That’s an understatement.

The Troopers will be out there for a while - the SoA Fish and Fur weenie was talking about a “reduced” moose and ‘bou population.

I gotta wonder if these college educated idiots can connect the dots on what wolves eat.

I guess you have to add “school teacher” to the list - the local kids are besides themselves. She was a popular and well liked teacher.

Anyone who doesn’t think that large predators will eat people is living in a fantasy world. I’m sure before guns people were just another part of the food chain, especially kids and older people. Wolves are cool, but they do not coexist with humans and livestock very well.
I find more and more people talk about animals as if they are the same as people, so if they kill and eat a human, oh well. Of course, that’s probably because it wasn’t them or a family member killed.
My sympathies to everyone who knew this teacher.

Man Horrible they need to do some serious thinning on the wolves, they will learn quick that humans are a very bad thing to get close too.

As long as guns are commonly carried wolves are smart enough to avoid humans. I imagine that these wolves have now learned that humans are easy prey.

It's a mistake to think that wild animals are going to cut us any slack simply because we are human, nature doesn't work that way. Our big brain doesn't impress a predator one damned bit but you can teach them what the smell of powder residue in a gun barrel means.

Predators can learn more about you from your smell than most people even vaguely understand.

I bred and hunted with Beagles for years, the things they could pick up with their sense of smell was mind boggling. You have to experience it to believe it.

Why does Sarah Palin support shooting wolves in Alaska?

Snip: "I am outraged by Sarah Palin's promotion of this cruel, unscientific and senseless practice, which has no place in modern America," actress and animal activist Ashley Judd said in a press release. "Because she is apparently determined to continue and expand this horrific program, I am grateful that Defenders will aggressively fight to stop her. I am proud to be a part of that effort."

You mean a fur covered killing machine that weighs as much as an adult human?

That travels in gangs packs and will attack almost anything?

Ya, those wolves.

I would not be surprised to see them thinned out - completely.

Trouble is, another pack will fill in after a short period.

SO, you have to hunt them all the time, every year.

IF the Troopers can kill enuf, the area might have a couple of years for the moose herds to recover, and so gain some more time for us humans.

I am sure Ms Judd cares not in the least about this poor woman - someone who was literally eaten alive.
