The listing is here: http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/W9110-Sawmill-Rd_Blanchardville_WI_53516_1113633655

I’m emailing the realtor right now to make sure certain legal details don’t get left out.

Hi, Red Devil,

Thanks for the links. We started peppers last week. I am going to start some herbs this weekend. Hubby is still busy clearing a space for our dwarf orchard which we have ordered.

My heirloom seeds came in this week. Both of my daughters have birthdays this month, so I have given them a gift of heirloom seeds, and printed off a booklet of instructions for each type.

Our last day for frost is in May, so we are waiting impatiently to get the garden going. LOL.

I have to take out two large evergreen bushes and a couple of trees on my property. Would you suggest we tackle that ourselves, or try a landscaper?

Thanks for any advice.

I have removed trees from my property but they were downed by hurricane winds and I did not have to fell them. Just had to cut them up limb by limb with a chainsaw. Then had a guy come in with one of those stump grinders and remove the stump.

How big are the evergreen bushes and trees?

Safety is the biggest thing to be concerned about.

I just love those funny looking brown and green fishies!
Lettuces, marigold, raab, and caulis have popped in the tank. Love that earthy smell.

I concur with RD. Safety is king. If you know how and have the clearence so that you don’t knock them down on the house, go for it. Otherwise, pay and INSURED\BONDED tree guy to do it.

Thanks for the advice.

The evergreens sit at the end of the driveway. They are huge and a hazard to navigation when you are trying to back out or in to the driveway. I trimmed them last fall, but they grow fast. I want to get them removed or do it ourselves and then plant a couple of beds of flowers or something.

That’s the plan for now.

It never fails to amaze me how a seed the size of the head of a pin can generate a seven-foot tall tomato plant loaded with fruit...which in turn generates thousands more of the same seed. There really is no reason for people to go hungry...

I’m getting my onions in tomorrow. Just bought some manure to add to the dirt in the onion box. I have seed potatoes - Yukon Gold and Norland Red. I’m going to try planting them in garbage cans. I also bought some horseradish. Have to find a suitable place to plant it. Meanwhile, our strawberries that we started last year are growing and my rhubarb is coming up. I bought a small greenhouse with 4 shelves for my starter plants.

Mr S just got out of the hospital today. He was in for a week. Had a pacemaker/defibrillator implanted. I guess I’m doing most of the digging from now on. Hmmmmm. I’m picturing a small rototiller!

If you can afford it you should just call a tree service to remove your problems. They will do all the work and remove all the cuttings. I would call around - a landscaping service might be able to do the job - but I bet they would contract out the tree removal.

The evergreen bushes might be another story. You have trimed them in the past so you would know what you are up against in removing.

I have a Dogwood tree that I plan on removing myself. It is about 20 feet high and dead. I can reach quite a bit of the lower limbs just by standing on the ground. It is out in the open with nothing around that it could fall on. It forks off into two main branches right at chest hight. I can cut them off one at a time (one a weekend) and clean up the mess one at a time.

Hey Dolly,
Did you have fun in the dirt?
Did you plant anything, or just play?

It is finally melting! Instead of a sea of white, the garden is now a sea of mud.

The 2 raised beds have standing melt water even with the tops of them, BUT the perennial onions that are planted in them are about an 1”-2” tall. It looks like they were putting out shoots while still buried under the snow.

Our Christmas cactus turned into a Thanksgiving Cactus, and has now rebloomed during Lent...but the flowers will be gone long before Easter.

The last of our seeds have arrived; and the germination tests on some old seed I found buried in a box are finished. That has yielded 3 beautiful hot Hungarian Wax pepper plants, and some onion seedlings. Tests also indicated I'll be expecting to get about 50’ of Blue Lake pole beans.

We got a skiff of snow last night, but it was gone by noon.

I have the last roll of poultry wire I'll need to both expand the fencing out & around my bath tub beds, and to finish rabbit proofing the existing garden fence.

I'll also have enough to do the repair work needed for a chicken yard to accommodate my chicks by the time they arrive and are old enough to come out of the brooder.

I also found a couple of large squares of rabbit hutch sized hardware cloth the Hippies (in the 1970s) had laid aside. As I started to move it, it kept on revealing more and more. In all I have 12-14 sheets of it, so maybe we'll be getting some rabbits next year.

I should be able to clear space in one of the barns to accommodate them; the hard part will be building bins under the hutches to properly contain the waste for either future composting use, or aging for direct use to the garden. The good thing about rabbit manure is that it can go directly into a garden without ‘burning’ the crops.

The people we sold acreage to three years ago are going to start & plant extra Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and other hardy crops for us in their garden. They are also doing most of my seed starting for us; in return, they are getting a 20X50 strip of our garden for stuff such as corn that needs a lot of space.

Sometime in May we'll have our bare root peach tree arrives.

Late April, the County Extension horticulture agent is coming out for a pruning seminar on our neglected apple trees. I've been slowly getting some of then in shape, but we have many old orchard trees that haven't been cared for for at least 30 years. We'll probably end up buying dwarfing/semi-drawfing rootstock, and grafting onto that. Some of those trees go back 75 or more years! Some of the applewood will go through the shredder for the smoker; and some will be used directly for BBQing. IF, and that is a BIG 'IF', any of the wood is decent enough, I'll try milling it.
