It was 69 degrees here in southern MA when last I checked. I have chives coming up strong and crocuses blooming. My azaleas that we transplanted inside the fence last summer to save them from the deer are starting to look more full. It’s wonderful to have all the windows open!
Red,
first let me say...I love this thread.
now, here in IN, we have been very warm this week and supposed to be 70ish today. it’s killing me. i want to plant my veggies and flowers but i know the weather in my area will change back to normal in about 5 minutes. i’ve got daffodils blooming like crazy, the wild onions are getting up and it makes the whole yard smell like an italian restaurant, and the last couple of nights i have heard the frogs talking. the robins are back, too. i say it is really spring. now if mother nature would cooperate by keeping the temps above 55 i would be the happiest of hoosiers.
So far I planted:
Pole beans
Pole peas
cabbage
lettuce
spinach
beets
kale
a variety of potatoes, including one called “irish rose” that has this cool pink flesh
I tossed in some acorn squash and pepper plant seeds, they, like the pole beans have yet to make an appearance, but everything else is coming up
I also planted radishes. Didn’t need to!
A few radish plants went to seed last year and I got radishes coming up EVERYWHERE!
My big project so far this year is turning over and re-seeding my back yard, which up to now will only grow moss and crabgrass. Got about 12-13 hundred square feet more to go, but I think it’s gonna come out real nice.
Wish you good luck on that back yard project!
I’ve used them also and was quite satisfied.
But it seems as more and more of what you might call the “heirloom” type potatoes are becoming available at places like Lowes, etc, so I’ve found a few exotic varieties there and can’t wait to see what comes up!
I have to push the limit between how fast I can get it done and how much I can do without getting blisters!
But I have a real good spade and am not hitting too many rocks, so it’s looking good!
Snowstorm right now at 8500ft elevation in the Colorado Rockies. About 6 inches so far, but it is supposed to keep snowing till Saturday. Low last night was 16F. I started 2 types of tomato (Japanese Black Trifelle and Paul Roebson) and one eggplant indoors yesterday. I see one of the dogs has already pulled one of the plastic name tags I put in the pot :(
My parents are coming from Indiana, to New mexico to visit. In their back yard they have Burning bushes and Golden Privets, they have grown into a hedge row.......could they bring me small pieces as grafts?
I would love to have them for a front windbreak along the fence.
Got your bluebird houses out yet? I saw two yesterday. Red wing blackbird was visiting the pond and the sandhill cranes have filled the cornfields near here.
Cleared flower beds yesterday and am going to plant strawberries and rhubarb today.

I’ve managed to get out to my land twice this week (thanks Mom!!!) Compared to about 4 times in the last year. I’ve decided to stick with seeds this year whenever possible, even with plants that are not normally grown from seed.
This week, I’ve planted pawpaw seeds, rhubarb seeds, marshmallow seeds, and one tomato. I know its way too early for tomatoes and it’ll probably freeze, but I planted it anyway. With a generous amount of weedblock and colored garden stakes, hopefully I’ll still be able to find what I planted!
On that note, the first month I owned this land I planted about 20 trees, most of which vanished in the surrounding weeds. I’ve been gradually finding the taller ones again, but kind of gave up on the littler ones, I figured they’d been smothered to death by the weeds (which get to be taller than I am). Last spring I was sitting in the grass and realized that the grass under one hand felt weird, so I pulled it back a little to see what was under it, and lo’ and behold, there was one of my stone pine trees! It was somewhat stunted, but still fighting. I trimmed the weeds around it and laid down some mulch, and when I checked it yesterday it had tripled in size! Its still only a foot tall, but I’ll take my victories where I can find them.
And another surprise, the guy whose house is next door to my land, a man known by the charitable nickname of “Mr. Grumpy”, is selling his house! If anyone wants details I can post them.
sure...
Starting peppers today, and tomatoes & flowers next week. We're to get a slushy snow mix tonight and then back to cooler temps in the 40's. The warm week really gave me a jump on getting the nursery yard at work set up...the floodgates open next weekend!
Great news! So-long, Mr. Grumpy!
Wow! I’m impressed!
It’s a bunch of ‘leftovers’ from work, actaully. I can’t bare to toss anything that I can save. I do that with houseplants, too. Things can get pretty crowded around here, LOL!
Hmmm. I’ve never thought to check at Lowes for taters.
They look incredibly healthy! Well done!
