The unearthly beauty of this image taken high above the planet would make Nasa proud.

But it didn't need millions of pounds of technology to capture.

Just a little British ingenuity that saw a standard digital camera taped to a helium balloon and floated into the sky.

Space enthusiast Robert Harrison managed to send his home-made contraption 22 miles - or 116,160 feet - above the earth's surface from his back garden.

Incredble. Move NASA to this guy’s back garden. Tie Sen Bill Nelson - “the astronaut Senator” to one of these guy’s ballons then cut the string.

These pictures are fake. If they were real Rozie O’Donnell cover half the horizon and you’d see the Mao balloons floating over the White House.

The duct tape around the camera-housing is an especially nice touch.

I could be wrong, but I believe that you need a FAA permit or waiver to launch such a balloon here in the US.

I know there are payload restriction, which this probably falls under, but there might be height restrictions as well - not sure.

It’s done very often here in the US. Quite often the balloon is tracked via ham radio. Its pretty routine.

A helium balloon will not go into space.
