New Jersey Assembly Bill , A.B. 4175, introduced on 23 November 2009 will require physicians, dentists, and nurses to complete 30 hours of volunteer service in their respective fields as a condition for biennial registration.
Well.....Guess what New Jersey? This is the final straw. You just lost another provider. Happy? Whose going to treat all those folks with insurance now?

Thank you for the research.
When I saw that the bill had only two sponsors I figured it was DOA, but it’s nice to hear it confirmed. Agree with your other comments too.
They already do this to lawyers in NJ.
No kidding? And it’s been found Constitutional?
Why not require this? After all, most parents (even here, I would bet) seem PERFECTLY HAPPY to require volunteer work as a condition for high school graduation.
You cannot have it both ways.
I’m not sure how much it was challenged, but it’s been around a long time. It was either in place already or very early in my time of working for a law firm, over 19 years now. Maybe lawyers didn’t want to feed their (somewhat well deserved) image as selfish b*stards.
It’s called “mandatory pro bono” and of course the lawyers try and do the least onerous bits of it, like serving as pre-trial arbitrators and stuff like that. They are not really spending the time helping the indigent, we still have legal aid and all that. (I’m sure some take it very seriously and do good work for people who need help, but of course those folks would do that anyway.)
So, the precedent is on the books.
Color me shocked.
Everyone knows the best medical care comes at the point of a gun.
*sigh*
How about giving them something that they could probably handle like emptying bed pans.
How likely is this to pass, given NJ’s new governor? I hope and trust he will block it.
According to post #20, it’s dead. May it be buried facedown with a stake through its heart.
I would suggest a bill to replace it: Every member of the NJ legislature should work at least once a week in a soup kitchen.
There’s a difference with lawyers. Lawyers also get to choose their pro-bono work and, for a lot of them, it helps satisfy their political goals.
Also, lawyers are able to get (too) rich off of the legal system in which we allowed them to operate. To force a maximum salary of $10/hour on lawyers would not violate free-market principles and would, indeed, result in massive economic growth.
unbelievable!
Sounds good - it would give the bums somebody to look down on.
And people get mad at me when I tell them that the belief that "health care is a right" is an endorsement of slavery.
