WASHINGTON A national memorial to former president and World War II general Dwight D. Eisenhower would include eight-story columns and metal "tapestries" of photos, according to plans announced Thursday in Washington.

His life was a monument to strength and liberty.
A bit extravagant for my taste. I wonder how Ike would feel about this.
Monuments diminish men. I’ve thought Eisenhower an underrated president but his legacy is his record.
Gen. Dwight Eisenhower
Eisenhower was widely admired. We toured his home in Gettysburg.
Yes, I know who he was.
I believe he wouldn’t like it one bit;) Too showy and expensive.
If you noticed, as I did, Ike is never mentioned by the MSM and there will be no reference to the 41st anniversary of his death.
We certainly could use his quiet strength, decency and sense of duty during these trying times.
He was a giant of a man.
"It's a monument with freedom," he said.
Right. I want to spend $80 million so some 22 year-old doesn't feel stuffiness on his dates.
I think the whole concept of building monuments to presidents has become a practice out of hand. Where else can one be employed at a job for 4-8 years and earn a national monument? Even give work in other areas it seems a little out of balance. In mmost other places of employment one would be forgotten if they worked so little time. One works 30 years and gets a watch or certificate or at best a trip.
Agree. Can you imagine the Jimmah Cahtah Memorial ?
It shouldn’t be done lightly. One thing I like about the US is traditionally (though I think it’s slipping now) is that like the Vatican used to, they’d wait decades before honoring presidents significantly. Some better-informed freeper will know the details.
I like it because it prevents demagogues from being rewarded before history has assessed their true contributions - or lack of them.
Eisenhower at least deserves his.
Very underrated President. Victim of the whole secrecy around the height of the Cold War. Ike is almost a 180 degree opposite of Zero; Ike was all action while Zero is all BS.
Why are they going to put diagonal lines and jigsaw puzzle pieces in the middle of Seventh Street? Is that part of the seismic activity monument or something? :)
I have no problem with building a memorial. BUT! We cannot afford it right now. How stupid are these people to spend money on non-essentials right now? This is like me building a park in my backyard when I can’t pay the mortgage. Gggrrr
Dwight D. Eisenhower Speech - Farewell Address
January 17, 1961
The prospect of domination of the nation’s scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present—and is gravely to be regarded.
