His life was a monument to strength and liberty.

A bit extravagant for my taste. I wonder how Ike would feel about this.

Monuments diminish men. I’ve thought Eisenhower an underrated president but his legacy is his record.

Eisenhower was widely admired. We toured his home in Gettysburg.

Maryland resident Thomas Claggett, 22, who was visiting the World War II Memorial on Thursday with friends, said he liked renderings of the new monument. He said that he could imagine taking a date there and sitting under planned trees and that it was more open and less stuffy than the Lincoln Memorial.

"It's a monument with freedom," he said.

Right. I want to spend $80 million so some 22 year-old doesn't feel stuffiness on his dates.

I think the whole concept of building monuments to presidents has become a practice out of hand. Where else can one be employed at a job for 4-8 years and earn a national monument? Even give work in other areas it seems a little out of balance. In mmost other places of employment one would be forgotten if they worked so little time. One works 30 years and gets a watch or certificate or at best a trip.

Very underrated President. Victim of the whole secrecy around the height of the Cold War. Ike is almost a 180 degree opposite of Zero; Ike was all action while Zero is all BS.

I have no problem with building a memorial. BUT! We cannot afford it right now. How stupid are these people to spend money on non-essentials right now? This is like me building a park in my backyard when I can’t pay the mortgage. Gggrrr

Why would they do all this to honour Ike? Other officers and leaders of other countries didn’t like him because he was inept. Patton was the true hero of WWII, and had he lived I’m sure would of been the next president, there is a man who should have a memorial built in his honour.

Two things, I just assume presidential monuments be limited to their presidential libraries.

Second, Ike has monuments already all over the country called the interstate highway system.

Uh, no. I like Ike, but this is too much. Something this size should be for all past and future Presidents, at least.

How about out in front of the Eisenhower memorial (whatever form it eventually takes), a statue of Patton pissing in the Rhine?

There is already a monument to President Eisenhower: his presidential library and museum. It is located in Abilene, Kansas, the town where he grew up, right off Interstate 70. His grave site is within a short walk.
