A boating crash in Orange County on Saturday evening sent one man to the hospital.

Orange County sheriff's deputies said an 18-foot-long pontoon boat ran ashore and landed on top of a 54-year-old man who was working on a jet ski in his back yard on Lake Holden.

Investigators said there was some sort of mechanical malfunction with the pontoon boat, which sent it out of control.

The injured man was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center with chest injuries and a large gash to one leg. Deputies said the driver of the pontoon boat was friends with the victim.

The sheriff's office said charges are pending.

Yeah, right. Maybe the Nut Behind The Wheel?

One time my sister was riding a jet ski. She fell off, the throttle stuck at full, and the thing darted at the beach at full speed. It was only a few degrees away from people (including babies). It lodged itself under a dock.

Doesn’t make sense. Throttle broken? Steering broken? Ingition key won’t turn off? All three would have to be kaput in order for this to have happened. Unless there is more to the story.

This is weird. An 18’ pontoon boat can go about 5mph.

yeah, that’s a little one. There’s a 25ish footer at the Marina where our boat is that has dual 175 Johnsons on it. I bet it’ll do 35-40

Some people just need extra adult supervision.

That depends on the engine. It might go 40 mph.

Used to be that way...but as with everything man is involved with, they have to have speed. We now have tri-toons whizzing up and down the lake we live on well in excess of 5 miles per hours. Ours is 24 ft and will go 24 or so miles per hour. I hate to think what those beasts are doing.

Lake Holden is about a quarter mile from where my folks live. My brother was even mayor and on the city council of a small city nearby.

Deputies said the driver of the pontoon boat was friends with the victim.

Well, he did ask his friend to drop in sometime.

LOL! Not sure why anyone would want to go 40mph in a pontoon boat. Though it would be the perfect cover to smuggle drugs ;-)

I wouldn’t either. But many will ski behind them at a lot more than 5.
