Continental Europe and Britain are likely to see more unusually cold winters like last season due to low solar activity, according to a new study by British and German researchers published on Thursday.
Their work showed that periods of quieter sun activity influenced atmospheric conditions, creating a blocking effect against warm Atlantic air that would normally reach the region, resulting in colder winters.
The meteorological changes affect the jet stream above the region, rerouting the usual mild westerly winds and allowing cold and dry wind to gust over Europe adding to an overall lower temperature.
The study said that conditions even suggest an eight percent chance that a chilly Maunder minimum-like era could occur once again.
But the scientists insisted that their findings did not disprove the theory of climate change.
We stress that this is a regional and seasonal effect relating to European winters and not a global effect, the study said, adding that results presented here indicate that, despite hemispheric warming, the UK and Europe could experience more cold winters than during recent decades.
To reach this conclusion, the UK researchers incorporated data from the Central England temperature (CET) record, which dates back 351 years, with sun activity data put together by the Max Planck specialists.
Director the Institute for Solar System Research there Sami K. Solanki said he used magnetic field measurements to measure sun activity, but because these records date back to just 1900, researchers reconstructed older levels with the help of computer simulations.
The connection between sun activity and the cold winter in Europe was only recognisable after we calculated out the overlaying trend of global warming, Solanki said in a statement.

I am on my way out the door...just saw this....be back later.

Man-created CO2 must be responsible for solar activity levels.
Why not,...they are even trying to tie the Iceland Volcano to man’s efforts....somehow.
Colder winters - caused by global warming, of course.
Ya think???? God will NOT be mocked......we will be PRAYING for Global Warming!
We’re gonna need a bigger bandwagon for the coming mini iceage europa event.. fur bikinis will be in at St. Tropez.
Yeah, well, umm, you see, the Sun has decreased activity over Europe, so that’s why Europe’s climate might become colder. Everywhere else in the world, though, our Sun’s activity level remains high, so the rest of the planet will heat up, proving man-made global warming. Thus we still need a Socialist World Government to control man’s every activity and prevent volcanoes from erupting.
Makes sense to me.
See, Al Gore was right. It’s working already!
Who knew the sun was a factor in global warming?
I thought it was all about CO2 and cow farts.
Bush’s fault!
Ya gotta love this volcano- perfect timing! While the enviro-wackos are out protesting against your can of hairspray, nature barfs up millions of tons of debris into the atmosphere! Nature is what they are all about, right? So they have to be pro whatever the results of this would be.
Of course, with their warped thinking- man will still be responsible. The volcano erupted because of all the earthquakes, and there are a lot of earthquakes because all-powerful humankind has made the non-sentient planet MAD by progressing past squatting in the dirt.
Even so-it reminds us that all the cow methane, all the ozone-depleting hairspray and fossil fuel emissions we can create are NOTHING compared to nature.
I’m seriously hoping it cools the planet- especially down south here. Summers are brutal- and a quiet hurricane season would be great.
Herbert Formayer, a meteorologist with the University of Vienna, told a local radio station that the large amount of dust particles spewed out by a volcano beneath Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull (should be a spelling bee word) glacier will enter the Earth's stratosphere and stay there for several years. The stratosphere is the second layer of the Earth's atmosphere at altitudes of above 12 km. The stratosphere is dry and contains little water vapor. Because of that, little rain or wind is found in the layer and any dust particles that reach it would stay for a long time.
Formayer said that the dust particles from Iceland are likely to "stay in the stratosphere for one, two or even three years."
"As the dust particle would stop the sun's rays to the Earth for such a long time, it would also cause global cooling," he said.
I kinda wanted jungles in Montana again. ANYWAY global warming is so much better than global cooling.
More evidence that our climate is the direct result of the sun.
Tell the libs that if they want global warming to stop, then they should fly to the sun and drop a few tons of water on it.
Everywhere else in the world, though, our Suns activity level remains high, so the rest of the planet will heat up, proving man-made global warming.
You know, I was picturing millions of politically correct liberals nodding along with that ridiculous line of reasoning when I read the piece. You know they're doing just that, with nary a grain of that icky logic messing up their brains.
