Bill Gates chucks cash at climate cooling cloud creator
The Register ^ | 11th May 2010 06:02 GMT | Rik Myslewski in San Francisco

Boffins want to curb climate change by building a $7bn fleet of 1,900 ships to crisscross the oceans as each sucks up ten tons of seawater per second and blasts it a kilometer into the sky to create clouds to absorb sunlight and cool the earth.

And Bill Gates is funding them. No, really.

The Times Online reports that a San Francisco research group with the cloudy name of Silver Lining has received $300,000 from the billionaire mosquito terrorist and tiny-nuke pusher to fund research into the aforementioned geoengineering project.

The Times notes that the US and UK scientists involved in the project witnessed the wimpiness of climate change–fighting agreements (or lack of same) coming out of last year's Copenhagen conference, and decided that it'd be global seppuku to wait for international action.

So they're going it alone: Ships + pumps = gushers. Gushers + clouds = cover. Cover = cooling.

So how much energy will these ships use propelling themselves across the ocean and a constant stream of sea water 1 km in to the air?

Or will it all be done with “magic”?

From the Times Online:

Bill Gates pays for ‘artificial’ clouds to beat greenhouse gases

******************************EXCERPT**********************************

Bill Gates, the Microsoft billionaire, is funding research into machines to suck up ten tonnes of seawater every second and spray it upwards. This would seed vast banks of white clouds to reflect the Sun’s rays away from Earth.

The British and American scientists involved do not intend to wait for international rules on technology that deliberately alters the climate.

************************************snip***********************************

Other types of geoengineering, such as mimicking volcanoes by using aircraft to spray reflective sulphate particles in the stratosphere, would have much longer effects on weather patterns.

Stephen Salter, Emeritus Professor of Engineering Design at the University of Edinburgh, said that there was no need to wait for regulations because the trials would not add chemicals to the atmosphere. But Sir David King, former chief scientific adviser to the Government, said that experiments with potential consequences beyond national borders needed international regulations. He told The Times: “I do not see any geoengineering solution which does not have unintended consequences or is not far too expensive.”

*******************************************************

And from the comments:

**************************************EXCERPT********************************

paul clark wrote:

If this works why does Bill Gates advocate a CO2 tax? Anyway, this cloud seeding is just a gesture. He doesn't really care about a technological solution because Bill Gates has already identified people as the "real problem" on this Earth. If you go to this video:

http://www.ted.com/talks/bill_gates.html

at 4:44 he discusses a role for vaccinations in population reduction: “If we do a really great job on new vaccines, health care, reproductive health services, we could lower [global population] by perhaps 10 or 15 per cent.”

Of course, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is one the largest providers of vaccination programs in the third world, so the implications are chilling.

A $300K down payment is a far cry from the advertized $7B total price tag....which is a pittance compared to what it will cost to keep 1900 ships running around the globe continuously. Guess where the balance will come from? Probably a UN fund that the US will exclusively pay for.

At that rate of climate moisture in 18 months or so the temperature should begin rising a degree a month for the forseeable future. By 2012 mean earth temperatures should be about 120F. We will have finally achieved global warming.Way to go, Bill.

From WUWT:

The Union of Concerned Scientists tackles gardening to save the planet

********************************EXCERPT**********************************

From a press release from the Union of Concerned Scientists, we learn that you don’t need to worry anymore about global warming, we can just garden our way to carbon nirvana, that is, if the bugs don’t eat it. -Anthony

WASHINGTON (April 26, 2010) Home gardeners can avoid contributing to climate change by using certain techniques and tools that are more climate-friendly than others, according to a new gardening guide released today by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS). The science-based guide explains the connection between land use and global warming, and offers recommendations for conscientious gardeners to maximize the amount of heat-trapping carbon dioxide their green spaces store and minimize the other global warming gases gardens can emit.

“Many Americans understand that powering our cars and computers overloads our atmosphere with heat-trapping gases like carbon dioxide,” said Karen Perry Stillerman, a senior analyst with the UCS Food and Environment Program. “With the right practices, farmers and gardeners can lock up some of that carbon in the soil.”

There is actually a little science at work here, not mentioned in the article. The idea is not to vaporize vast amounts of water that will turn into clouds, directly.

Instead, there is a thin layer, just a few millimeters thick, of warm water that covers the surface of ocean water. Oddly enough, it strongly inhibits evaporation from the ocean. But by spraying a thin mist of water over it, this layer is broken up, and evaporation really jumps. And *this* is what puts a lot more water into the air.

The idea was first conceived as a way to get more moisture into the air off the coasts of harsh deserts, such as in Chile, where there is the phenomenon of the ocean, right next to a desert where it almost never rains, and is one of the driest places on Earth.

The biggest problem is that for ships of this sort to uptake that much water, they have to contend with “biologicals”, from microscopic to large animals, that clog the uptakes.

However, out in the oceans, the whole scheme may be thwarted by yet another oddity, and one that doesn’t seem to make much sense.

Evaporation, alone, does not make clouds.

Everyone had long assumed that when there was more evaporation, that clouds would form, but this is not necessarily the case. As part of the Man Made Global Warming theory, researchers went to the mid-latitude tropics to study evaporation and cloud cover, and discovered that the two seem to operate independently of each other, to a great extent.

There were times where the rate of evaporation off the oceans was enormous, but the skies were crystal clear, and remained so. At other times, with minimal evaporation, the sky was soon filled with clouds.
