Steven is a democrat, but I have loved his work for most of my life. First story of his that I read was “The Langoliers”. It was some fantastic sience fiction I suppose, great, great story. I have read a great many of his books since then, and I have always enjoyed the movies made of them, even though some were low budget.
Steven King is a real treasure, especially for those of us who like horror.
Very uneven. Extremely good stuff, along with pure cr*p. Much of it doesn't do well on the screen.
I agree, I just wish he’d stay out of politics. He surprised me with some of his remarks, because Roland and a lot of his characters have a more conservative flavor.
The first book I read by King was Salem’s Lot. It was around 2:00 am when I was reading the part where the women and the boy were opening the cellar door to drive a stake in the heart of the vampire. They opened the coffin and it was empty. The cellar door was flung open, and there was the vampire.
At the exact same second when I was gripping the book as I got to the part where the cellar door opened, a cat fight erupted on my front porch, and a cat tried to jump through my picture window.
I jumped up and yelled (or screamed) and the dog was going nuts, woke my wife and she was ready to call 911. Ha!
King should invent characters, environments, and scenarios and then have someone else write stories using his components. He is incredible at a lot of what he does, but fails miserably in a couple key areas. Hmm, I guess he’s the Ron Paul of authors.
The Langoliers movie sucked.
I am a fan of King as well but some of his books are downright horrible (though they are few) The real stinker of the bunch IMO is "Cell"...
Zombies created from cellphones?!?!?
Every time I see that book I think of this bit from Family Guy:
Stephen King: Now for my 300th novel, a couple... uh...On the other hand "Duma Key" and "Bag of Bones" are some of my recent favs. Really good reads! Another dog IMO is "Lisey's Story". At halfway through the book I was hoping some huge monster would just eat all the characters just so something interesting would happen. Never did finish that one.
[casts about desperately]
Stephen King: is attacked... by a giant... uh... lamp monster! Oooooooo!
Editor: You're not even trying anymore are you?
[sigh]
Editor: When can I have it?
I love the Gunslinger series but a trilogy isn't gonna even get close. They made a trilogy of Lord of the Rings and it was just three books and they had to leave out chapters of good stuff. (Never gonna forgive Jackson for editing out the scouring of the shire which I always thought was the main point of the story. (You can't go home again, cause home is forever change while you were gone.)
Still I'll be looking forward to seeing it.
OK now for the next big question:
Who is gonna play Roland Deschain?
Maybe this guy:
or maybe:
Or:
Depp would be interesting, But Jackman and Owen have played more tough guys where Depp has played more cerebral type characters.
