When my late daughter was young, I use to design and make her little pageant dresses. Nothing like the ones of today but they were pretty fancy. I loved sewing. I am ashamed to say I did not make anything for my granddaughter who has a little 2 year old of her own. Bought another fancy sewing machine so hope to get back to it soon.

The dress she made for her daughter cost a whole $1 and is very cute. She used one of the fancy stitches on the machine to sew around the neck, armholes and hem so she did not have to do anything else. I thought she had a very good idea. I doubt if I would have thought about doing that plus she made a little pocket at the top for the pacifier.

I learned to sew from my mom who could look at a dress, skirt or whatever and go cut it out and it would fit perfectly. I can not do that. When my other daughter was on the dance team, she needed a costume but no one had one to sell. She brought home one of the other girl's and I used it as a pattern and made daughter one. It looked just like the other girls.

Another idea I saw in a pattern book was very cute. They had bought pillowcases and cut the seam at the end and made a seam to run ribbon through. Nothing to it. It would be perfect in this AL summer weather. I did not see if it had little panties to match but that could be done with the other case.

"Which skills should every man and/or woman know?" ...."After that you can do most anything as long as you do not try to ignore the laws of physics."

Being skillful in ...uhhhhh ...ermmm....[how to put it delicately] .........in the sack.

When it gets hotter than an oven in Arizona, it's time to think of ways to keep the mind occupied,

When that happens here in Michigan, usually in late July, I simply remind myself of what I was doing back in February...........shoveling snow and sliding on the highway.

Give me heat and lots of it.........I love it!

I always consider our summers as reverse winters aka penance for the rest of the year. While those in other states are stuck indoors and hibernate in the winter, we do this during the summer.

The best skill anyone can have is thinking outside the box. Being able to improvise and make things McGuyver

Does being able to take down a building with a leaf blower, a motorcycle carburetor, and a can of gas count?

Know how to cook at least a few simple dishes.

My Grandmother knew how to make superior doughnuts (not a simple dish), but her skill and willingness to sell them on streetcorners helped my family get through the Depression.

Basic gardening skills and knowledge of a few easy-to-grow vegetables. Canning, drying, or pickling skills are useful too.

I can do all of them well, except the button.

Read a Map (I love maps!)
Drive stick shift. (I have a stick shift)
Change a flat (done it a few times)
Load and fire a hand gun (shotgun have done many times, but handgun, maybe once).
Sew a button (done it before, but I’m terrible at it.

Everybody should be able to take apart their computers, replace any (or all components) with suitable alternatives, reassemble components in such fashion that when the on button is pressed none of the smoke gets out of any one of the arbitrary components. Furthermore, component EEPROM should be re-programmed with suitable versions as may be available by vendor and/or manufacturer. Extra-credit for being able to hex-edit said firmware to accomplish specifc needs. Master journeyman’s card awarded for writing C code and compiling such code into device drivers as required.

Moreover, knowlege of existing version, availability of any and all updates, installation and / or updating of device drivers (either OEM or custom personally written) for pheriphersals is considered “goes without saying”.

Furthermore, the foregoing must be accomplished in such manner that functional state will never be lost regardless of degree or magnitude of changes to existing systrm. This obviously entails understanding the need for, planning and implementing disaster recovery objectives, policies and methodologies for all realistic scenarious, including obviously failed EEPROM flash, HDD failure.

A systematic checklist should be established for diagnostic purposes in order to appear competent and have a rationally intelligent conversation with tech support using the phrase: “yep done that” often and frequently.

We are in the most ‘unconventional’ war, being waged against us by our government right on our own front lawns!

“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.” Robert Heinlein

BUMP! I love that quote. :)
