Denial of Service Attack on FR?
Alexa Internet Stats ^ | 6/21/2010 | Alexa

Posted on 06/21/2010 5:32:40 AM PDT by sam_paine

"A denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) or distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) is an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. Although the means to carry out, motives for, and targets of a DoS attack may vary, it generally consists of the concerted efforts of a person or people to prevent an Internet site or service from functioning efficiently or at all, temporarily or indefinitely."

Just asking... Plenty of articles on here lately like the gentleman who painted a sign on a truck in his cornfield, and someone who didn't like the message set it ablaze.

If someone would like to reduce the reach and effectiveness of FreeRepublic 20% in a day or two, why bother with laws and FCC internet control etc. Why not just crash the servers?

I’ve been having trouble getting on Free Republic for two days. Today I did a search for the FreeRepublic Yahoo site and a link came up to the FreeRepublic home page, so I clicked on it and got right on Free Republic. It’s been really weird.

What good does that do when there is no server?

One should contact Freepers and conservatives in their area BEFORE FR disappears, right? Can't do that unless you know who's in your area which is what the state boards are for, local groups.

I have been unable to access free republic during the last hour. Did anyone else experience this?

Why limited to "in your area?"

There used to be local chapters. They used to be active. If the gubmint shuts down the internet OR the left hacks FR and does serious damage, we need to be able to communicate. Local chapter heads would contact state heads etc. This has been talked about since before the election when we were being hacked.

Hi guys:

I live outside DC in MD and couldn’t get on most of Saturday or Sunday. Just before I lost service, I noticed someone has used my name and a botched taglibe to comment on an obscure thread regarding an upcoming ‘Boondocks’ flick. I reported the abuse, but I guess the admins have their hands full right now.

Jack.

If we each have three or four contacts - with some overlap - we should be able to make it work. Open local regional organizations could be connected officially. I hate to think we’d have to use the ways of an underground organization - distributed printed material... best to talk about it now...

Local chapters are good. However, I think it simply won't happen.

I think what drives FR's (and other sites like Hot Air etc) is the anonymity.

Not just because it's easier, but for the same reason it's dangerous to your car to put an anti-Obama bumper sticker on it and advertise.

Again....look at the guy in Missouri who got his tractor/trailer sign burned.

We need to be public about our opposition long before any other "tough talk" I've seen on other threads.

You were saying ...

A DDoS attack was precisely what I thought of yesterday when FR was down for major portions of the day.

I do believe we've had them before, but yesterday wasn't one of those times, according to what Jim Robinson said. He reported it, on our official alternate site, that it was a server that crashed hard (as he put it). He also mentioned that if it couldn't be brought up (running again) that we might need to replace some of the hardware. Apparently they were able to get it up and running again.

You were saying ...

Do we know for sure what took it down?

Jim Robinson reported that it was a server that crashed ... and he said "crashed hard" ... LOL ... so that was it ...

I’m not an expert, but I thought it might have something to do with this:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2538560/posts

No it doesn't, because I've watched those IP numbers switch back and forth for many years now ... that's not it ... :-)

Maybe transfering to new servers then?

No, not something that was planned ... Jim Robinson said that the server crashed hard and that they might have to replace some hardware, but apparently they got it running again without doing that.

You were saying ...

I was wondering if they were taking out the Sunday Morning Talk Thread? Most read thread of the week.

No..., it's just that servers crash at the wrong times ... LOL ...

It's like -- "Is there ever a good time to die?" ... and so there's never a good time for a server to crash, either ... :-)

The point of a DOS attack is to crash the server.

You were saying ...

I was wondering if Jim or John had any theories on what’s been happening?

Well, this much can be said -- it wasn't something like a DDOS attack. They've had that before and have said it. In this case it was a server that "crashed hard" ... as Jim Robinson put it.
