Saudi Arabia has ordered the country's cell phone service providers to halt all BlackBerry services this week, the latest Mideast nation to announce moves to exercise greater control over data sent by the Research In Motion phones.
The country's Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) on Tuesday asked Saudi Telecom, Mobily, and Zain Saudi Arabia to suspend service to BlackBerry phones on Friday, the Saudi state news agency SPA said in a report detailed by Al Jazeera. The suspension was being implemented because BlackBerry service "in its present state does not meet regulatory requirements," the SPA said.

I’m afraid to ask what our own government asks of these companies.
Considering that this country is infected with Islamists who thrive on the idea of murder, enslaving others, mulilation of their women and kidnapping house-servants - I can see where the gov’t might want to keep a handle on what is being said on these phones.
Too bad they don’t have the courage to engage these animals directly, but politics certainly plays a role here.

LOL - I’ve no intention of testing Saudi laws. I’ll be quite content to be in Ireland in approx ten weeks, where I’ll see perform a Scots lass, amongst other singers and musicians.
While the UAE has focused on regulatory compliance issues and the security implications of BlackBerrys encrypted communication services, Saudis feel the impending restrictions are primarily driven by social and political reasons.
While many BlackBerry users in the UAE are expatriate businessmen and bankers, the vast majority of the estimated 700,000 subscribers in Saudi Arabia are Saudi nationals who have long whispered about a potential ban on BlackBerrys instant messaging service, largely owing to its popularity among the countrys youthful population.
