Republicans Passed the 1965 Voting Rights Act
Grand Old Partisan ^ | August 6, 2010 | Grand Old Partisan

On this day in 1965, the 1965 Voting Rights Act was signed into law. Contrary to myth, Republicans supported this law much more than did the Democrats. In the Senate, 94% of Republicans voted in favor, while just 73% of Democrats voted for it. In the U.S. House of Representatives, 82% of Republicans voted in favor, compared to 78% for the Democrats.

Senator Everett Dirksen (R-IL), co-author of the 1965 VRA, helped outmaneuver Democrat opposition: "There has to be a real remedy. There has to be something durable and worthwhile. This cannot go on forever, this denial of the right to vote by ruses and devices and tests and whatever the mind can contrive to either make it very difficult or to make it impossible to vote."

The 1965 Voting Rights Act achieved for African-Americans a major goal of the GOP's Reconstruction Era-civil rights agenda, which the Democrats had blocked a century earlier.

The Republican National Committee re-published this article on the RNC website.

I’m on a mission — to show Republican leaders the benefits from appreciating the heritage of our Grand Old Party. See http://www.grandoldpartisan.com for more information.

I’ve been at this for years, with my Grand Old Partisan blog and speeches and book, fighting the good fight.

To be fair though, this was back when there were still such creatures as “liberal Republicans” and “conservative Democrats”. Both parties have changed a great deal in 45 years.

The Republican ‘leaders’ we have today just want to be accepted into the club.

I see no fight in them. Until we get new intelligent people to replace these couch potatoes, it will not change.

Thanks! By ignoring their party’s heritage, Republicans place themselves on the defensive. Every day, http://www.grandoldpartisan.com celebrates the achievements of the GOP.

That is a very prevalent sentiment. There was posted last night an article titled "Amputate or Die by Dr. Jack Wheeler" that spelled out exactly what is at stake. I don't want to link another thread but if you didn't catch it, it might be worth a read. Posted by renown freeper pissant, who maybe you don't agree with on some things, it was a stark assessment of America's situation.

Actually. The Southern Dems became Repubs. And the Northeastern Country Club GOPers became Dems.

But it is a fact.

Good question, how does one find out this kind of thing?

Was drunk Teddy a congress critter back then? I bet Al Gore Sr. voted against it.

I just found it on another post:

Senate: 77–19

* Democrats: 47–17 (73%-27%) * Republicans: 30–2 (94%-6%)

House: 333–85

* Democrats: 221–61 (78%-22%) * Republicans: 112–24 (82%-18%)
