Radio commercials--Ad Counsel
Radop | 8-15-10 | Pigsley

As a big consumer of radio, I listen to the commercials, too.

Anybody out there know about the "Ad Concil"?

I'm guessing that they are a tool of the left/Fed gubmnt...But, the commercials are beyond silly. One actually "informs" you that it is a good thing to talk to your infant...so they learn to do it, too!

I didn't bother to Google this, because I figured somebody here would give me a better, funnier, more truthful take on this boondoggle.

My favs are the old, semi-famous, black actors pleading with the boobs who aren't answering their phones 'cause the evil mortgage men want to ask them where the payments for the crappy house they couldn't afford are.

The stupidity isn't reserved for the dullard African Americans. They actually step away from that old tried and true watering hole and go for the other demos.

Here are some (and there are LOTS) yucks:

Ask your parents to take you to the forrest. (Played during hour 3 of the Limbaugh program...Guess some poor 11 year old raised by old Hippies is going to man up, step away from the AM dial and suggest going to the great outdoors is the thing his smelly pot smoking, loser parents, will take into consideration at the weekly family meeting.)

Talk to your baby so they learn how to speak, mentioned above. The stupidest one was targeted at the goofballs that aspire to be upwardly mobile and think cheese is the ticket.

Pay your bills or you will be in even more trouble.

Turn off the light.

Well, that's the drift. Anyone else think THE AD COUNCIL is something to look into? Maybe help old fat and fugly Moochelle with a bit of budget trimming to add to her "programs"?

The one I found obnoxious was when they were whining about "Smokey The Bear". Said it was just "Smokey Bear" not "Smokey the Bear". Kind of like Atilla Hun and Eric Red.

The one about the hornet's nest and the little girl is the one that drives me crazy these days. I don't think that the "Ad Council" is made up of very bright individuals.

The Ad Council has endeavored to improve the lives of all Americans since first creating the category of public service advertising in 1942. From our earliest efforts including "Loose Lips Sink Ships" to the more recent "I am an American," Ad Council PSAs have been raising awareness, inspiring action and saving lives for more than 65 years. Based on our long history of ,effecting positive change, it's fair to say that Ad Council campaigns have inspired several generations of Americans. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that future generations will reap the benefits of our efforts to date, and continue to be inspired by our public service campaigns in the future.

I hate those silly “ads”. It’s just the gubmint nanny state telling the supposed yokels how to do things that every 6 year old used to know, back in the day when America was AMERICA and not littered with the products of teacher’s unions.

I am surprised they have not produced an ad telling of the most effective way to wipe one’s posterior after dropping a deuce.

Last time I heard, and then dialed away from one of those ads, I wondered how many millions, perhaps billions, of taxpayer dollars have been wasted producing such useless wastes of airtime.

These ads have been around as long as I can remember.
Someone someday should defund them and save us all some money.

Actually, his name is "Smokey Bear". "The" was added to make the song flow better.

Definitely! I’ve been saying the same thing for weeks. Have you noticed the ads that have the kids lecturing their parents? Such as the one about forest fires and the kid is telling his father “it’s still smoldering” blah blah blah. The ad council is nothing but left wing/obama propaganda crap.

I like the ad where they warn you not to lean ladders up against high voltage wires

Yeah well everything starts off with the best of intentions but the Ad Council of today has clearly been captured by socialistic/communistic leaning parties. They patronize and lecture and talk ‘down’ and put us ‘regular’ people in place. It’s little more than propaganda.

In response to the post about shelly and the ‘hornets nest’ I agree...that one makes me feel like jabbing a sharp object into .... someone else’s head...lol

Is there some sort of Federal regulation that forces conservative talk radio to give SOOO much of their ad time to these dimwits?

Are they forced to do it free as a nod to fair-and-balanced content or something?

Can, say, a Second Amendment group create and run some ads on self-defense shooting techniques through them?

Who funds these losers?

Paradoxically, Each one I listen to convinces me MORE firmly that “liberalism is a mental disorder.”

PSAs (”1-877-kars-4-kids”, McGruff etc) are often thrown in to replace unsold ad spots. There are times during the yr when there’s a lull in sold spots so you hear more. Also running PSAs make stations look good during license renewal time.

I’m impressed that you found three different ways to spell the group’s name.

As has already been mentioned, the Ad Council is a long-standing non-profit, private organization whose goal was to capture the creativity of people engaged in advertisng and provide constructive "public service", that is, not paid for, announcements promoting programs the Council deemed worthy.

The Council board is made up of execs from media, internet, and Corporate ad execs.

Radio stations, at one time, were required to run a certain amount of PSAs (Public Service Announcements), or at least devote a certain amount of their programming to "non-commercial" activity. Those requirements are largely a thing of the past, although it always looks good when a station's license is up for renewal.

Anybody, the Salvation Army, your church, Red Cross, etc., could send stuff to a station and maybe they would play it. The Ad Council, ostensibly, with the talent available, could make better and more effectived ads.

Obviously, it seems they missed the mark with some of us.

I listen to Rush, et al via the computer from a good station in York, PA.

The ads they run that drive me crazy are “what a wall says” and it has “walls” saying how mirrors have been hung on the them, how they’ve been decorated with dinosaurs, how kids have had their height marked on them, etc. and then things get bleaker and bleakers and the walls talk about how they are responsible for a child’s “rage”, etc.

It is creepy stupid ANNOYING and it is about lead paint, I think.
