GIRLBAND singer famed across the continent was dramatically put on trial for GBH yesterday - for giving a lover HIV.
Top pop star Nadja Benaissa, 28 - whose group is Germany's equivalent of Girls Aloud - admitted failing to tell a string of men she bedded that she had the virus.
The chart beauty - accused of deliberately putting them at risk - faces up to ten years in jail if convicted in a trial that yesterday gripped Germany.
She told a judge: "I'm sorry from the bottom of my heart."
Benaissa, one of the country's most famous personalities, was handcuffed in front of concert fans in Frankfurt and led away by cops last year after one of three men she exposed to the virus pressed charges.
No Angels ... Nadja, right, and bandmates Like Girls Aloud, her band No Angels was formed in a TV talent contest - the smash-hit continental show Popstars.
The group sold five million albums before splitting, only to reform for Eurovision - coming 23rd in 2008. Mum-of-one Benaissa insisted at her trial in Darmstadt she only kept her illness secret to spare her little girl social stigma - and that she never meant to infect anyone.
She claimed: "It was said to me that the probability of me passing on the virus was practically zero.
"I also concealed the fact that I was infected to my acquaintances. I did not want my daughter to be branded by this. I told the band members because I trusted them.
"I never made it public because I thought that would mean the end of the band."
Two former lovers escaped catching HIV, but the third has the virus.
He told the court yesterday: "I have been told by my doctor my condition can become full-blown Aids at any time."
Careless
The man, 34, accused the star's management of trying to buy him off. Facing her across the courtroom, he said: "You caused me so much grief."
He only found out she was HIV positive three years after they split - when her aunt told him in 2007.
During their 2004 fling Benaissa is said to have already known for five years that she had the virus.
Clad in jeans and a purple blouse and with her hair in a ponytail, she yesterday insisted: "I never wanted this to happen to one of my partners."
But she did confess to being "careless during those days" over having unprotected sex.
She is charged with attempted GBH on the two other men she slept with. The trial is expected to last five days.
