My paternal grandmother cooked and ate large meals with lots of bacon, eggs and other things the health nazis decry. I'm sure she was overweight, but she was active, butchered her own chickens and made her own beer.

She was in her late 80's when she had a stroke. When she came to and gathered her family around, she told them to please understand that she did not want to spend years in a nursing home, so don't try to force her to eat. She passed away peacefully just days later.

If you eat more calories than you burn you get overweight. It is as simple as that.
All Calories are the same since a calorie is a heat measurement.
There is no such thing as an empty calorie.
A calorie from a soft drink is the same as a calorie from a piece of tofu.
To lose weight just stay on a diet with 1200 to 1600 calories a day. You do not have to do anything else.
Sugar is not bad for you and you need some each day to keep your brain going. You should have some sugar daily when you are on a reduced calorie diet in order to keep from getting depressed or cravings.
As long as you can tolerate the sodium, Campbells Chicken Noodle makes a really good, satisfying lunch that only has 180 calories to the whole can. Which means that it is a good way to reduce between 300 and 400 calories from your daily intake from just one meal.

She probably lived in the country and, as such, had a low stress lifestyle. Stress, IMHO, plays a much bigger role than anyone in the medical profession will admit. Take a look at a cemetery in a city, then look at one in the country. In the city you'll see lots of people who died in their 40's, 50's and 60's. The one in the country will have lots more folks who died in their 70's, 80's and 90's. (and the ones in the country regularly ate bacon, eggs, gravy, biscuits and other stuff that is supposed to kill you)
