Do we dare let aliens know we’re here?

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Even if humanity could reach out to an intelligent alien civilization, scientists are polarized over whether we should.

Famed astrophysicist Stephen Hawking has argued that the extraterrestrials we contacted would be likely to harm us, a view that divided the experts here at the SETIcon convention.

*SNIP*

However, Douglas Vakoch, director of interstellar message composition at the SETI Institute, said of aliens: "Even if they tend to be hateful, awful folks, can they do us any harm at interstellar distances?"

The average star is more than six billion years old. The Sun is 4.5 billion years old. So the average advanced civilization could be a couple of billion years more advanced than we are. Is it possible they could harm us across interstellar distances? Absolutely! It is IMPOSSIBLE for us to conceive of their motivations or capabilities. Hawking is right. Advanced aliens might view us the same way we view cockroaches and zap us from a distance. We have no way of knowing. So... Shhh!

Or maybe they don’t contact us because they just don’t care?

We may in fact prefer aliens to our current masters.

They are already here....check the hundreds and hundreds of sighting reports and pictures on MUFON web site. They do not want to make any mass contact however for whatever reason...

We are probably already quarantined by the Galactic Order like a plague bug.

Or maybe they don't want to be directly involved with such a primitive species. They've been exploiting the resources of our solar system for a very long time. Why bring spoiled brats into the family of intelligent beings when we have yet to demonstrate that we are 'intelligent beings' in the sense the alien races regard that characteristic?

Imagine how fast the disease of our species arrogance would spread to the universe, if we had the capability to step in and out of volumetric time, to traverse the expanses almost instantaneously! We would be the disease all other races had to fight against which would corrode their civilizations into squabbling hordes. Better to keep us quarantined for now.

It might be a good idea to determine whether such life exists before worrying about whether we should contact it. It is kind of like a baby worrying about toothaches before developing teeth.

I have always been amazed that supposedly smart people just assume that a more advanced civilization would be benign. That has rarely been the case on earth.

We have been and we are. Don’t worry though unless Gabriel, the man who brought Islam to the world, shows up first with his pals.

Thats assuming his message to mohamed is what mohammed conveyed... but i tink mohammet cranked out his own crap and carnage.

This article is funny. Is someone proposing that we open the big ball that keeps all the radio waves contained to our galaxy thereby “accidentally” contacting them?

They would be smart to avoid official contact with us.

I try to and I am not even an alien!!

They wold be better off leaving us to our own devices and do covert work with a few of us and leave the masses alone to figure it out.

I think they are interested in our development and are excited on the coming changes in the next decade or two.

Life is rare. Intelligent life, even rarer. Intelligent life with potential would be awesome.

Imagine seeing our history from a third party point of view! I hope they are recording this because it would be fascinating what their take is on it and what they see that we don’t.
