Man ticketed after 'fat and ugly' barb

SAUKVILLE, Wis., Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Police in a Wisconsin town said they issued a $429 ticket to a man who allegedly told a fellow grocery store customer she was "ugly and fat."

Saukville police said the woman was shopping at the Piggly Wiggly and obtained permission from a clerk to use the express checkout lane, despite having more than 10 items, Milwaukee's WTMJ-AM reported Thursday.

However, another customer expressed displeasure at the woman being allowed to skirt the item limit.

"The female subject, the complainant, then turned back toward the man (and said) 'I got permission here. Is there a problem?' That's when the person said to her, 'Yeah, the problem is that you're ugly and fat,'" officer Barry Effinger said.

Effinger said the man allegedly continued to harass the woman until she called police.

The man, who Effinger said has a history of anger problems, was issued a citation for $429.

One can be issued a ticket for calling someone fat and ugly? How is that disorderly conduct? It’s strictly verbal - and, what if it’s true?

Obviously most folks did not read to the end of the article:

"Effinger said the man allegedly continued to harass the woman until she called police."

IOW, there's more to the story than the misleading headline. As usual.

One should be ticketed for not reading to the end of the article.

Were one to do that, one would learn that the guy -- who has a history of anger problems -- continued to harrass her until she called the police.

What’s wrong with people these days?

For one thing, they don't bother to read the whole article.

Just think of the outrage you'd have saved, if you'd only seen that the guy kept harrassing the woman until she called the police.

Oh, I don't know .... you don't think a guy with anger management problems, following a lady around and harrassing her, is involved in a bit of disorderly conduct?

What would qualify, in your mind?

Well, for example your uppity attitude qualifies in my mind.....you sound like an elitist with all the answers but lacking an open mind....sort of like trailer trash.

I’m not at all outraged, I was making a joke, it wasn’t addressed to you, and I did read the story.

How comfortable is that stick you got rammed up there?

I went back and looked at your "joke." Doesn't look like a joke to me.

How confortable is it knowing that you've got bigger problems than just being fat and ugly.

I didn't make it for YOU, dipstick, but for someone who appreciates my humor. Does the word "buttinsky" mean anything to you? Mind your own business.

How confortable [sic] is it knowing that you've got bigger problems than just being fat and ugly. [sic]

Well bless your heart for being concerned about my problems, but I'm used to being fat and ugly. I just can't figure out how you could possibly get used to the problem you have.

That stick is probably all you can handle right now. Run along and play somewhere else, if you're able to run with that stick up there.

If you think r9etb is “uppity” “elitist” and “trailer trash” ...
(BTW, how is it even possible to be all three at the same time?)
what do you think a reasonable person should do when someone “verbally assaults” them in public?

Ever heard of the term “fighting words” , to legally justify the victim initiating a physically violent responce? I am old, overweight and don't consider myself particularly attractive, but even when I was young, thin and pretty I never allowed anyone to verbally harrass me and escape unscathed. The very few who tried, would have much preferred to deal with the police, had they been given that option.

It’s strange, but r9etb does fit all three.

I just don’t think that in this case it was a police matter and worthy of a ticket.

Man Fined After Express Lane Harassment

Police report a man who berated a woman in a Washington state grocery store is now charged with disorderly conduct.

The Port Washington woman said she asked the express lane clerk if she could check out.

There was no one else in line.

But while the cashier was ringing up her items, a male customer started making ugly comments.

The woman called 911.

I went back through several levels, trying to get a better picture of what happened.

But it basically comes back to my original point.

If the harassment was personally directed at me publicly, the jerk would have been begging for police intervention, instead of enduring the logical consequences of his actions, at my hands.

You persist in acting as if the woman “should have” engaged in an argument, or even a physical altercation with the man who started the situation.
