Whooping Cough Makes Whopping Comeback (vaccination avoidance)

But whooping cough, named for the high-pitched "whoop" a person makes when inhaling, has made a comeback, with an incidence rate up by a whopping 2,300 percent since 1976, the year when fear of the vaccine began to take hold and vaccination rates started to plummet. In 1976 there were only about 1,000 reported cases; in 2005, the most recent peak, there were nearly 27,000 reported cases (and likely over 1 million unreported cases), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

At issue was the "whole-cell pertussis" element of the vaccine, since replaced in most countries, including the United States, with an "acellular" formulation (which includes purified proteins from the Bordetella pertussis bacteria), indicated by the "a" in DTaP, a common abbreviation for the vaccine these days. While never conclusively associated with brain damage, the original formulation was tied to other serious albeit rare side effects, such as allergic reactions and seizures.

Are these people nuts?

It’s not “vaccination avoidance’. Any kid that goes to public school must be up to date on vaccinations.

How about, “Legal papers avoidance”.

It’s not “vaccination avoidance’.

I added that to the title, parenthetically.

Thank you. I remember my kids could not go to school without vaccinations. I had to produce the records every time we moved too.

Well, sorry but seriously, that’s wrong.

It takes a lot to “avoid” vaccines unless you homeschool or are Catholic.

Parents are not avoiding vaccines nowadays. They are skipping the group shots and spreading them out in a different time schedule.

I homeschool, I’m a Catholic, and I have many friends with kids with Autism. Trust me, MOST American parents vaccinate their kids.

It’s the illegals bringing these diseases.

It’s the illegals bringing these diseases.

Apart from the article stating something completely different, you have a point.

I remember when I was in college and grad school they sent me a letter every semester requesting my vaccination history and every time I threw it in the trash. My family doc retired in his nineties when I was about 20 and my medical records vanished. They were real files filled with hand written paper notes...not electronic files. I was never not allowed to enroll and pay tuition.

I’ve always wondered if my doc intentionally destroyed his files to keep the “system” from digitizing them. He was my parent’s doc, my grandparents doc, and my great grandparents doc. he delivered me. He was very old fashioned.

Yeah, well if you want to believe Yahoo and their using the UK as an example for what is going on in the states, I guess that’s your right.

A couple of years ago I had a devastating flu. The MDs didn’t recognize it and kept asking me “Have you been to Mexico lately?”

True story.

We are in the process of getting all of the hospital staff vaccinated. For adults, it’s usually not a big deal, just a hacking cough that takes forever to go away. It’s devastating to infants though and the CDC is recommending DTaP for all hospital workers, even if they are not due for the Tetanus booster.

It may depend on where you went to college. For public schools vaccs used to be required. I don’t recall having to produce shot records when I went back to college in my late 20s, but it may just be that I had to and I don’t remember. I do recall my sons having to get me to round them up when they went to school.

That’s interesting. Of course, for dogs, the vacc doesn’t work for long, and there are a number of strains so even if they are current on the vacc they can still pick it up. I never worry about it unless I have young puppies at home.

I vote for a different cause of the resurgence in whooping cough, TB, and all the other third-word plagues making a comeback:

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.
