Same here! I had no special diet either...just the stuff they said to drink the day before which I mixed with Ginger Ale. No big deal. Never heard of a 5 day diet prior to a colonoscopy. Perhaps someone should check again to be sure that is what they heard.

Half gallon of Gatorade mixed with bottle of Miralax powder does the trick. Start this about 18 hours before procedure.

Your right there are reasons for the extreme 5day prior what I can/can’t eat.

Last time Doc came up to me prior (knowing I would OD the list of rules as I did and ate only from the ok list) and said “I bet you are really sick to your stomach right now”

“Yeah I AM, how did you...” in my duh/naive or I get it tone..

He just laughed and patted my shoulder.

Oh! Hah he ordered me to eat off the stuff I normally can’t tolerate in life list. He KNEW I would be bent over and sick as a dog. Double duh.

Not this time! Lessons learned.

"That and waiting in the waiting room the next morning, hungry and grouchy."

Don't know about your doctor, but mine always ends up getting behind (pardon the pun) in his schedule. Your appointment might be at 11 a.m., but you'll be lucky if you get your procedure done 3 hours later. On top of that, the hospital I sometimes go to, has pictures of their cafeteria food posted on the walls of the waiting room. Nothing worse than having to fast, then sit for extra hours, while being tormented with pictures of pizza, burgers, etc.

The tip for drinking the GoLyte now is drinking it very cold.

Hah. We will see if that makes drinking ocean water with a hint of Lemon/Lime any easier.

As another poster stated it is the feeling throwing it all back up.

And I am so prone to suggestion it isn’t even funny, got to be real careful on what I think or is suggested to me.

Ever had that happen?
Peanut butter recall and all of a sudden you have an over whelming craving for Peanut Butter?

My procedure was early in the morning and it was at sort of a specialty place, I think they only do this sort of thing. I’m lucky to live in S. FL and they have so many old people that it’s sort of a cottage industry, so they have it down to a science.

"Miralax is so much better than the stuff they used to make you drink (magnesium citrate.)

That's good news, because I have to do that and Duco Lax in October. The last time I had a colonoscopy, I threw up the magnesium citrate crap they told me to take.

On another note, I had to have a temporary colostomy in July and have to have a colonoscopy before they will go back in and reverse it. Has anyone had experience having this procedure with a colostomy? I understand they go in through the stoma. And, I'm assuming I should take a change of bag since they'll end up taking off the one I'll be wearing. Any advice or helpful info would be greatly appreciated.

One food for the 5 day prior diet was French Fries.

I would have never thought of French Fries.

I love french fries and don’t normally eat them but have them of the diet plan now.

Tomato juice is ok too. Which is something that is part of my normal diet that I enjoy sipping.

Dear Old Mom recently was scoped. She followed the doctor's specific instructions to a T, and when the procedure was finished the 30 year old Oriental doctor was insinuating she hadn't followed his instructions and said she has diverticulitis or something. He then went on to say that she will need to come back less than a year for another scoping.

I was there when the doctor was chastising Ma... she nearly hauled off and belted him aross his sassy mouf.

Next time, I bet Ma will eat nothing but scotchbrite pads for 5 days leading up to scoping day.

Once you drink the magic super-flush juice it doesn’t really matter what you have eaten - it’s coming out.

You want to avoid anything red, though - might make it harder for the doc to spot polyps.

Absolutely true story, this.

My first (of several) scopes was performed by a very HOT 40 y/o female Gastro.. whatever. On the assigned day, she asked sweetly if I would mind if the procedure was observed by some Medical School students.

If you guessed most of the students were female, bingo! That moment was worse than the prep, and, Oh, what a relief when she administered the sedative cocktail! At least I got some excellent photos, suitable for framing.

And Ive had good reports too

Excellent! Hope things remain "clean" for the rest of your natural life.

Sardines packed in olive oil are good in the days prior along with blocks of cheese and hard-boiled eggs. To me, beer is a clear liquid, they just tell you not to drink it because it dehydrates you. OK, so I chase each glass of beer with a glass of cold water and there you go.
