We allow a million legal immigrants per year here. Thats a million, legal, each and every year. If thats not a good number for you, think about what might be a good number and propose it. But know why you think its a good number and be prepared to explain why it is in the interest of the citizen to allow whatever number you propose. Because, in the end, immigration policy should serve the interest of citizens.
Meanwhile, remember that we allow a million legal immigrants every year. So the issue isn’t immigration, its “illegal” immigration. Its the folks we didn’t invite. And the companies who rip off the legal worker in preference to illegal workers who can’t complain about their treatment.
And, in the interest of fairness, Mexico’s immigration policies are much tighter than ours. They are pretty lax if you are there to spend money, but if you want residency to live and work, its pretty tight. If they seriously believed our prosperity was due to the presence of cheap foreign labor, they’d open their southern border. But they don’t, so they don’t. They send back a quarter million illegal immigrants per year themselves. They don’t believe in an open border and no one else does either.

There's nothing to "feel" about it. It's against the law.
I don't understand why an immigrant wants their first act upon stepping on American soil is to break the law and then, subsequently, live outside the law. They seem to want all the benefits of living here while scoffing at the laws the rest of us must live by and avoiding the taxes we all have to pay.
I also don't understand why liberals think that unlimited immigration is in any way compatible with a welfare state.

I think my fellow FREEPERS have canvased the topic thoroughly with key points. I have minor points to add to the mix.
Why should illegals get in line ahead of those who go through the lengthy process or get employer visas to come here? (Do you realize that Mexican officials horribly abuse illegal immigrants from countries south of them? rape, human slavery, robbery etc)
Why should we help corrupt officials in Mexico exploit their own countrymen?
Mexico has lush natural resources and a large hard working labor force to put those resources to excellent use. Mexico could be a wealthy, industrious country - a garden spot and a gem among tourist and business destinations - if the corrupt ticks in the country stopped drinking the lifeblood of the people. THugs embedded throughout Mexican politics NEED their strong, young, vigorous and bold citizens - to LEAVE the country in order to maintain the status quo. Illegal immigration to the US prevents Mexican citizens from effective protest and work shutdowns (to agitate for change)etc. If the energy of illegal immigrants is funneled out of the country - then the remaining populace can be corralled, controlled, oppressed, defrauded etc. If illegal immigration could be stopped tomorrow - the corrupt drug cartels and officials would PANIC. The young, strong, vigorous among them would have to face down the corruption in the country to better their own way of life. And it would get ugly. But after they fighting and protest and real bloodshed - the people would have control of their resources and Mexico could become what her people want her to be. Mexico could fulfill her promise. Why would I want to deplete US resources to meet the needs of people willing to break into our country and take without giving while helping the corrupt in Mexico keep the country impoverished and festering to facilitate their own personal lottery lifestyle?
Hylandia, I regret the likelihood that you will be banned, because I’d like to ask you a question. What benefits to the U.S. do you think ILLEGAL migration provides? Unlike those here who accepted your question, I think it’s absurd on its face, so I refuse to take your bait and answer you. I think my question back to you goes to the heart of the matter. So does this question: How come you “liberals” are so — ummm — liberal with the sovereignty, security and rights of the American people? Liberal in my context meaning giving it all away freely; even attempting to shame the American people into accepting the Left’s flawed world view against their best interests.
I oppose illegal immigration because:
1. People who live off the grid, even if they work, do not contribute as much, financially, to the country.
2. Many who come get welfare benefits. I oppose welfare on principle, but, they are especially bad because they have not paid into it. Abuse of ERs is notorious, particularly in California, to the tune of millions if not billions.
3. People who tend to break one law (crossing or staying illegally) tend to have a lower regard for the law overall.
4. People who have not invested the time or money to become a citizen aren’t as patriotic, if they are patriotic at all. I can’t prove that, I just think it is human nature.
5. Particularly in a depression, when jobs are scarce, I think citizens should come first for jobs. I reject the idea that “Americans won’t do” the work. Do they list the picking opportunities on CraigsList? I’ve never seen them. We can’t work if we don’t know where/when to go.
6. In many states it is far to easy to vote if you are a non-citizen. I don’t think non-citizens should be voting, and there is little effort to combat the voter fraud.

As for Obamacare, I oppose it because I do not believe in government enforced charity.
There are many things necessary to life. Food. Clothing. Shelter. Medicine. Health care. Clothes. Transportation.
To say “the government must provide it” means I must provide it for you.
I believe it is my responsibility to provide the necessities of life to myself and my dependents. Not everybody in the country.
If I would like to help others, it should be voluntary, not coerced.
Just as I would not steal your wallet to pay for my orthodontia, I would not support socialized medicine.
There are many negative outcomes to socialized medicine, as amply shown by the UK experiment, which I’ll post in a separate post to you.
Also, socialism bankrupts people and nations.
But my main argument is one of principle. As Margaret Thatcher famously said, “The problem with socialism is, eventually you run out of other people’s money.”

PS: These days in CA, you’ve no doubt heard the radio commercials that say California has 1/3 of all welfare cases in the US but only has 10% of the population. Why do you suppose that is?
