CLEARWATER — An 83-year-old man leaving a restaurant pulled a gun on his attacker and thwarted a robbery attempt Thursday morning, police said.

About 11:20 a.m., Charles Place was leaving Costello's, 1724 N. Fort Harrison Ave., when he was grabbed from behind by a 43-year-old Bryan Treloar, city public safety spokeswoman Elizabeth Watts said.

Treloar, a transient, tried to take Place's wallet, but Place resisted, holding his attacker's arm as they struggled, Watts said. In the scuffle, Place was knocked onto the ground and pulled his .25-caliber semi-automatic handgun from his pocket.

Place told Treloar to get away from him, and Treloar took off, Watts said. Witnesses followed Treloar, however, and he was taken into custody shortly afterward, Watts said.

Place, who has a concealed weapons permit, suffered small lacerations to his hand, police said.

In the time it took him to say Keep away from me , he could have popped a cap in that SOB’s head, and saved the cost of a trial.

Too bad he didn’t give him a permanent limp to remember not to try to mug old men. The old man will be hurting from this kind of treatment and this bstrd will be out walking around soon, instead of limping..

Too bad the old man didn’t shoot the guy. The next time the creep robs an old man, he may just shoot first assuming he might be armed.

I remember a story about some young punk walking up to an old man in his car and telling him to give him his money. The old man started fiddling around inside the car near a console and the punk asked him what he was doing? "I'm fixin' to pull out my pistol and blow your damned head off!"

Punk last seen running feverishly away

He needs to get something bigger than a .25 caliber and use it next time.

Just in case.

PPP (Pistol Packing Preacher) — If it had been me, he would have had at least one 9mm piece of lead in him. No tolerance for trash like this who would attack anyone, much less an 83 year old.

Yup, a .22 is better than a .25 for self defense.

Mine's a .380. It's not super powerful, but it hits a lot harder than a .22 or .25. It is just about right for a "Belly" gun, and it's still small & light enough that you don't mind carrying it everywhere.

I would never have a .25. I had a friend who was shot eight times with one, including three right through the belly button, and just two weeks later, somewhat the worse for wear, and with entrance and exit wounds all over him, he was back to doing light exercise.

Oh, the heck with that. You’d do a lot more damage with a serrated paring knife.

We actually had a woman in her 80s that lived in the country by herself pull a shotgun on home invaders. Praise to God she didn’t get hurt!

We really need a “Buy that man a beer” law for cases like this.

I believe any politician running for office who would put that out as their idea would get easily elected in 90% of the country.
