WATERBURY -- Police arrested a Waterbury man this week on charges he stole an American flag from Town Plot Park and flew a stuffed hippopotamus toy up the flagpole in its place.

Warrants are being prepared for a number of minors who police say also took part in the incident, as well as damaged the park's bleachers.

Jeffrey Kovic, 23, of 246 New Haven Ave., was charged with larceny and criminal mischief and held on a $100,000 bond, said Capt. Christopher Corbett, Waterbury police spokesman.

"I think he was the central figure in the flag incident," Corbett said, adding Kovic has a criminal record that includes convictions for assault, possession of marijuana, breach of peace, failure to appear in court and violation of probation, the latter of which already had him scheduled to go to prison.

What would they have done to him if he burnt the flag in its place?

I think Jeff had some priors and violated parole.

Ok. $10,000 cash is reasonable under the circumstances you just posted.

Just an aside, I once was held on $25,000 bond for calling my estranged wife a "witch" in front of a police officer. It ended up as disturbing the peace with a $50 dollar fine.

It all depends on the quirks of the judge.

With that comment, you're lucky you weren't held overnight in jail for observation. ;)
