VANITY: What kind of TV to buy -- ours broke!
living room | 09/28/10 | self

Posted on 9/28/2010, 10:48:34 PM by Yaelle

The volume control, which has been iffy for a year, finally quit working at all on our old "little" HD TV in the living room. We need a new TV rather quickly, and I am overwhelmed both by the offers around online AND the desires of certain young family members.

This should be in the 40s, inchwise, great quality so we don't have to buy one in the near future again, and good for watching movies, TV, sports, Netflix/other computer applications, and serious video gaming. Basically everything!

What would you get, or what have you recently purchased that you like?

I get a lot out of Freeper recommendations. Let me know what you'd suggest! I need to purchase it in the next 48 hours.

And what is a “good deal” price-wise and what would be a ripoff?

Go straight to WalMart and buy the closest Vizio set to the size you want. Very inexpensive and very good.

Vizio 42”...I love mine. Paid $649 two years ago; probably $499 today.

I have a Samsung LCD television - very good picture, great remote, reasonable price. The picture is almost as good as a Sony, but much less expensive.

I considered Vizio, but I did not think the picture was as good as the Samsung.

Any of the Samsung “Touch Of Color” models. Very bright and clean with an excellent contrast ratio.

Tell the guy you want one with a “scanning disk”, a spinning disk with a series of holes spiraling toward the center, for rasterization. You’ll thank yourself later!

My big TV went on the fritz a month back, so I hauled out my tiny Sony.

I committed to myself and my country that I would not buy a large flat screen TV until I am sure that Obama doesn't benefit from my purchase.

Amazing how good that tiny little Sony looks now!

I do not know about prices but a hotel I stayed in had a LG. The picture was great. Wal Mart would be a good place to go. I have a Samsung here by the computer but it is about 27”. It has good picture quality, too. Or, you could buy a 62” Pioneer Elite Pro-119 like I have. That would set you back about $6500.

Checked with hubby and he says to buy an LCD, 1080 progressive lines, above 200 hertz and that it supports 24 frames per minute so that you will get true BLU RAY high definition.

For brands you should get Panasonic, Phillips, Mitsubishi or Samsung.

You just can’t beat VIZIO for cost and very good quality!

I own three of them from the 50+ inch in the family room to the 42 incher in the bedroom and a 32 incher in the bath! 8-)

Oh Yea .. All are flat screen LCD’S and the oldest is over five years old and has never had any problems.

If possible .. I’d recommend buying one from Costco. (Two year take back policy)

Don't buy one. Save the money, and save the wasted hours in front of it for more important things. TV free for 10 years here.

Go to your local Best Buy - see if they have any demos or open box items that they’ve discounted... I picked up a 47” Samsung for around $900 that retailed for $1200 - came with full manufacturers warranty...

WE have the following in our house.

Vizio 32" LCD HDTV

Sharp Aquos 26" LCD HDTV

Sharp Aquos 40" LCD HDTV

Samsung 50" Plasma HDTV.

We have had good luck with all of them. The Plasma is our latest addition and it was $999 at Best Buy and came with a 'free' Samsung BluRay DVD player. Make sure you get a set with at least 3 HDMI ports and if possible, a USB port. Good luck, you should be able to get anything in the 40"-49" range inexpensively.

Give up television. You won’t lose a single thing of real value. Instead, use the time and money you would have wasted on it doing something productive and positive.

That’s my advice! :-)

Yep, love the Vizio HD LCD. I have the 47” from Sam’s club. 2 yr replacement plan on it. Great picture and sound. One of the HDMI ports fried with an electrical storm. Vizio sent someone out for free to fix it. Excellent customer service and quality wise, the closest there is to Samsung.
