Great back story to this World Series. Reds All-Star catcher Ernie Lombardi was injured and unavailable. The normal back-up catcher, Willard Herschberger, committed suicide in his hotel room in Boston during the regular season. Jimmy Wilson was a coach on the 1940 Reds and he had to assume the emergency catching duties in the World Series. He caught every inning in the seven game series won by the Reds.
