(Vanity) I don't like that donation graphic thing

OK, someone has to say it.
That donate monthly guy pointing you downward to donate is cheesy. Who designed it? The people who created pet rocks?
I want to see the bird that says "Well, where's your donation?" or the bulldog that says "Drop and give me $20!"
Or have a picture of the Founders asking you to donate.

I agree.
The next Cheesy Pointy Guy that walks onto this thread is a dead man.
To: Extremely Extreme Extremist
I am so extremely grateful to Jim for hosting FR that I’d even handle a donation request threatening to post Helen Thomas pictures on every thread until donation levels are met. There, I said it.... *shudder*
To: Extremely Extreme Extremist
I’m already a monthly. I just ignore the little guy.

I like the guy and his pointing. He gets an “A”, IMO.

Personally I like the Pink Floyd / Dollar bill graphic the best. They should have a contest or something to come up with cool graphics.
BTW it is still an extremely extremely small annoyance. I can’t even read news at any other site due to the adds, popups, integrates URLs, videos that play on their own and general junk built in to those sites.
This place is great due the simple user friendly and free layout.

I'm not too concerned with the little pointy finger thingie during this current FReepathon ... but more so of of one particular thread (don't remember which one) which below the finger thingie had a graphic with a regiment of what looked like Shinto warriors, bylined 'we are all black' or some such thing, with an
Adidas logo on the bottom of it ...
Couldn't believe what I was seeing! Did FR sell out? Are we now to expect commercial advertisements here? If so, it would be a first ... and woefully so.
Hope I'm wrong

I'm in absolute agreement about the great look and feel about FR. I work as a software developer (C++, Perl, PHP and Java mostly) but am a bit of a luddite away from the office since I work with technology all day long. In fact, largely due to inertia on my part, it was only January that I finally dropped my dialup (same provider since 1991) connection.
Using a text-based browser as I did, Free Republic was one of a handful of sites that worked well in that admittedly primitive environment. The absence of JavaScript, Flash and other adornments is part of FR's appeal since content trumps presentation. All IMHO and YMMV.

Once I became a monthly auto-contributor, Jim sent me a browser plug-in that converts Freepathon graphics into a naked blonde in a Ferrari......

Yup. Clean, addless site. A safe harbor in a sea of crap.

I like the waving, thumbs up, pointing guy. But, the red border around it bugs me. Someone should add "border=0" to the html in that link and the red box would go away.
