A range of insect-based food products, including worm crisps, chocolate covered scorpions, and toasted ants, has been launched in Harvey Nichols' Edinburgh store. The unusual range, priced from 2.95 pounds for a packet of worm crisps to 15.95 pounds for a tin of toasted ants. The line also includes Thai green curry flavoured crickets, toffee scorpion candy, Tequila lollipops with real worms inside and civet coffee, which is made from coffee beans that are prepared for roasting by being passed through a civet cat.
There is also a type of tea, which claims to have been picked by trained monkeys.
The range, called Edibiles, was also on sale on Saturday at Harvey Nichols' new Glasgow Pop Up shop, which will be open in the St Enoch's centre until Christmas.
"People are always looking for something different and the selection of Edibles from all over the world could not be any more different," the Scotsman quoted a spokesperson for Harvey Nichols as saying.
"We picked the favourite treats on offer from around the world. The sales are doing really well, and top of the list is the chocolate covered scorpions, followed by the Civet coffee," the spokesperson said.

I wonder how a date would feel if I brought her a box of chocolate scorpions?

I’ve had ants before - chocolate covered ones - in Japan. A little funky, but not much to them, really.
From what I’ve been told, the bigger the bug, the harder it is to deal with for the unaccustomed. Ants and the like just get crispy and mostly taste like the seasoning they are cooked with. But since they aren’t cleaned/gutted like a fish (or what have you), the larger ones tend to be, well, “gooshy” inside even after being baked/fried. I’m told the big water beetles popular in some Bangkok markets are especially so.
That said, I’d rather eat a half-dozen gooshy water beetles than one shellful of “Balut” (google at your own risk).
