TOPICS: Chit/Chat; Computers/Internet; Education
KEYWORDS: census; race
I was astounded by Bill Rankin's map of Chicago's racial and ethnic divides and wanted to see what other cities looked like mapped the same way. To match his map, Red is White, Blue is Black, Green is Asian, Orange is Hispanic, Gray is Other, and each dot is 25 people. Data from Census 2000.

Poorly done. The gray is very hard to see.
Almost as if he meant to hide it, or what it implies.

Gray.
They aren’t playing the racial allegiance game.

So does this mean we should avoid the “blue” areas? Especially at midnight? (cough)

Great link. Thanks. I am a white guy in So Cal and it’s surprising to see there are more white people here than it seems.

On the Tucson map there’s 50 people claiming home in an active cement quarry.

I was looking at these racial demographic maps several weeks ago. The most interesting aspect was where racial neighborhoods abut.
Generalizing, caucasian and hispanic areas blur together. Black and white areas too though to a lesser degree. But note how sharp and distinct the boundary lines tend to be between black and hispanic zones.

Here’s the map for Oakland/Berkeley, CA:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/walkingsf/4981425631/in/set-72157624812674967/
The comments that follow this page are interesting. Some people (college age?) seem to be apologizing for having lived in “less diverse” neighborhoods in the past.
The blue areas on this map clearly show SF/Hunters Point, Richmond, West Oakland, and the Oakland “flatlands” (all high crime areas).

My prediction would be “doggie”. Nancy on top. Strapon.

Specifically gray appears to be unpopulated (O’Hare and Midway airports). I’m guessing white is very low population? Is that chunk south of Midway really that sparse?
I agree these maps are poorly done.
To: MrEdd
It might be that gray has an “explanation” while white does not. It looks like the population maps were overlaid with airport, park, and street layers. That white chunk south of midway looks to be a railway yard.

Is the entire census block the cement quarry?
It could just be that Rankin’s program randomly generates a dot within the census block. I suppose it wouldn’t work to try to tell me where the two dots are.
Are there any good free websites now that geocities folded? I think I could make something better than this.

Thanks for the link.
It appears people like to have neighbors who look like them and share the same values.

He’s got two red dots right on what used to be Twin Peaks. Nothing at the end of that road but the quarry.
