Federal officials are turning to psychology in a new approach to get kids to choose healthier foods in the school lunch line.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is giving $2 million to food behavior scientists to use marketing tricks to encourage kids to pick fruits and veggies over cookies and french fries.

Some of the ideas include hiding chocolate milk behind plain milk, putting the salad bar near checkout, placing fruit in pretty baskets and accepting only cash as payment for desserts.

Couldn’t they just stop putting out the food that they don’t want kids to eat?

Sounds like Sustern’s (sp?) nudginess again. How about serving nothing but healthy food and those that don’t want it go hungry? Worked when I was a kid. What has changed?

All they have to do is to go back and start serving the food they gave me in middle school. Then just give them a choice.

Lunch lady: “We have broccoli, carrots and boiled fish over on this table. Over there we have Mock Pizza.”

I almost never ate school lunches as a kid. I usually had mine packed and I wonder what the school plans to do about that. If schools are so determined to control childrens nutrition then might they ban the brown bag altogether? Or worse inspect each lunch and determine it doesn’t meet standards.

How about letting kids pick the food they want to eat for lunch? I remember pizza burgers. Mmmmm, pizza burgers. That was a great day at lunch.

Our middle school just gave a dictate to stop selling “Skittles” and “Mentos” at the school store because of it’s “harmful sugar content”. These were EXTREMELY popular candies. The store is now at 20% of what it was making. Cracks me up.

Would save the taxpayers money and kids’ waistlines if they just contracted with airline caterers.

They just won’t let kids be kids.

This will piss kids off. They aren’t as DUMB as liberals want ot believe when it comes to food they like. It will backfire on them.

I went to a private Catholic HS and the cafeteria was contracted out to 2 teachers who served such treats as 'Venetian Loaf', (mystery meat) 'Buffalo Balls' (fritters), and golden brown french fries.

Golden brown because the fryers were cleaned out twice a year.

my kids eat hardly any junk food ,,never go to burger king etc
Now they were always brought up to eat veggies , fruit, fish etc but that’s them.

If the kid next to mine wants a burger one day or even if my kid wants a pizza then so what, it’s got nothing to do with the school or the Govt.

We’re even had to write in letters to the schools saying that my kids will not be weighed, , seen by their Doc etc .
Their height, eye sight, weight has nothing to do with the school.

Here’s a clue as to why schools are failing here, they are more interested in social brainwashing, playing parent then actually learning kids history etc.

Hell most people in this country have no clue about history anyway which is a shame.
Most people couldn’t even point out Iraq or Africa on a map.

Can you imagine how exciting it must be in a public elementary school to serve raw carrots, pineapple, NO nuts, broccoli, cauliflower and a nonfat dip for a birthday treat to the class? I kid you not.

Most public schools and some politically correct private schools will NOT allow cup cakes, cookies, ice cream, candy bags or cake for a birthday treat to the class.

I didn't know this till I went to the local grocery store and purchased all I needed to make cupcakes and cookies for my daughter's class on her birthday. The check out lady in the food store nearly had a heart attack! She was secretly envious that my daughter's school allowed that and also SHOCKED to see someone still doing it.

I could also see the nostalgia on her face as she spoke about her birthday parties at school when she was little. They allowed it then. Her kids can't bring that to school. It's a shame.

It's wrong to punish all for those that are “obese”. The diet of those children is up to the parents. Bother them about it ... not me!

During the summer time, I accompanied my 9 yr old nephew to school. His liberal school did the same thing. The kids “rebelled”, went outside to the closest store which is not under their idiotic school jurisdiction and bought their candies and munchies. That store is now making money more than the school store.

More pc crap is what kids cant tolerate.

We had two lines. In line one it was whatever swill the old lady in the hairnet was serving. In line two you had a choice, butter or cream cheese on your bagel.
