Jeff Fisher was asked to call timeouts for MNF commercial breaks

Our own Chris Chase wondered earlier Tuesday why Chris Johnson was in the game so late when the Tennessee Titans were beating up on the Jacksonville Jaguars on "Monday Night Football." You may have wondered why Jags head coach Jack Del Rio seemed insistent on prolonging the suffering in a 30-3 laugher...

"Jack used his timeouts," Fisher said. "My understanding is they needed network timeouts, and that's why Jack used his timeouts. They came over and asked me to do it, but I said, 'I was hoping to get a first down and kneel on it.'"..

""At the two-minute warning in every game in the fourth quarter, there are conversations that go by. There's conversations that take place at the two-minute warning before the first half. But there's conversations that take place, and it's the official's responsibility to give the head coach a status of commercials and TV timeouts," Fisher said. "Yesterday, I was told that they were two short. And they looked at me and smiled, and I said, 'Sorry, I can't help you.' Mike Carey came across and said, 'Here's the deal. We're two short.' And I said, 'Mike, I can't help you. I'm trying to get a first down and I'm gonna kneel on it.'""

McCormick told me that he did not know (nor did Fisher) whether Del Rio took his timeouts in accordance with Carey's request, or the league's specific need for TV timeouts.

According to several sources, the NFL is investingating ESPN's handling of the timeout issue.

Perhaps the most disconcerting thing about this story -- the part that made it so hard to believe at first -- is the idea of a television network, and the need for ad revenue, deciding the pace of a game...

This is another reason why soccer is not very big here in the US. TV broadcasters hate carrying soccer because there are no time outs. With the rare exception, the clock does not stop in soccer.

Like taking a 2 minute break from a soccer game is a big deal. What are you going to miss? Passing the ball back and forth and someone falling on the ground and clutching their shin because a blade of grass hit it?

Quite so. Golf tournaments go on during commercial breaks too -- they just use the instant replay to cover anything interesting that happened during the break.

The most common phrase used on TV during The Masters is "And this, just a moment ago...."

Now we have the side by side frames, one with commercial and audio and one with just the video of an ongoing event. It has been used with the Indy 500 and more so their insistence for breaks does not match their technical capability. I suppose they get more for the full screen ads.

As a Jacksonville fan (maybe paper bags are in order soon) I applaud Jeff for blowing the whistle on this. I admire his tenacity as a coach and hope Weaver makes a logical choice for our next coach and leaves Deloris out of it. Del Rio is done with the fans here.

Out of coincidence, I produced a tv spot with Jeff Fischer in 2005 at the practice bubble. I wish he’d have shown such assertiveness back then in keeping Pac-man Jones and the other hoods from goofing around and making noise during his stand up. He treated Pac like a ten year old who might throw a temper tantrum if you didn’t speak in gentle tones.

In this matter, no network Tech-Director should ever, EVER have communication with any team - other than to mostly get them on or off the field. Most good TDs are high strung, self-important, chain smoking maniacs. Sounds like one got a bit too amped up on his “power” - or was trying to cover his own ass for a mistake.

Rugby is just about the only thing I can tolerate watching... this thread is part of the reason why.

Isn't this what football is supposed to be all about? Isn't this why an NFL game typically consists of 11-13 minutes of actual play in a 3+ hour television broadcast?

Good for Fisher. As if the insipid MNF yap-fest wasn’t long enough already. They NEVER shut up! And every time a player breaks a big play, “Jaws” or Gruden have to gush about how amazing they are. It’s just one stupid play! Michaels never does that. I thought MNF would improve once they got rid of that liberal assclown Kornheiser. No such luck.

That's another reason to hate soccer. Americans will and should always hate that stupid sport.

Why is this news?

The NBA and NCAA Basketball have TV time outs every four minutes and everybody knows it.

FEMINIZING THE NFL so bulldog women can eventually participate and get paid the same salary as men because they will all be playing two-hand touch ball in the very near future is PATHETIC!

ALERT: MMA, make your money and save it, because YOUR NEXT!
