Writer Chastised for Criticizing 'Mike & Molly,' Overweight People
You can say a lot of things on the Internet. But as one journalist just learned, unless you want to be slammed as an idiot and prompt a boycott against the magazine for which you're writing, you probably shouldn't tell the world that you find fat people disgusting.
In a piece posted on Marie Claire's website Monday, Maura Kelly took the new CBS sitcom "Mike & Molly" to task for "implicitly promoting obesity." The show focuses on a couple who meet at an Overeaters Anonymous group.
"Yes, I think I'd be grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other ... because I'd be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything," Kelly wrote in a post titled "Should 'Fatties' Get a Room? (Even on TV?)." "To be brutally honest, even in real life, I find it aesthetically displeasing to watch a very, very fat person simply walk across a room just like I'd find it distressing if I saw a very drunk person stumbling across a bar or a heroine addict slumping in a chair."
"Now, don't go getting the wrong impression: I have a few friends who could be called plump," she went on. "I'm not some size-ist jerk. And I also know how tough it can be for truly heavy people to psych themselves up for the long process of slimming down. (For instance, the overweight maintenance guy at my gym has talked to me a little bit about how it seems worthless for him to even try working out, SNIP )"
Kelly goes on to dispense a handful of "nutrition and fitness suggestions" before asking, "Do you think I'm being an insensitive jerk?"

it didnt bother them when they called rush Limbaugh fat
I saw that magazine once about 10 years ago at the hairdressers and remember thinking it was vaguely obscene. Some article about “pleasant” abortions.
Overweight is a disability, and needs to be treated as such. We no longer shame and shun lepers. The same should be true of the overweight.
How were they pleasant?
“you probably shouldn’t tell the world that you find fat people disgusting”
I don’t find them particularly disgusting, but I can see how someone might.
you’re kidding, right?
There’s pleasantly plump, just plain fat, obese, and morbidly obese. Depending on the attitude and effort to change, the last two ARE disgusting. IMHO
If you’re going to say you find fat people disgusting, say it and be prepared to have all the fat people yell at you, and don’t bother apologizing because we all know you aren’t sorry for how you feel, you’re just sorry you had to hear how other people feel about what you said. I’m so sick of people apologizing because they can’t handle the reaction.
Opinions are no longer to be tolerated.
If you have an opinionated thought—keep it to yourself—never, EVER, dare speak or type it.
The first amendment is trumped by feelings and the protected class status...the new game of rock-paper-scissors.
I don’t remember, I just remember feeling slightly embarrassed to be reading something like that in public. I remember thinking it was second-rate as well as awful. I read one leftie fashion magazine a month, Vogue, just to keep up so I don’t look like a frump. And that one is enough.
You could always get criticism for you opinions. Why don’t you think people should be allowed to criticized for their opinions?
So even if someone is obese, if he is working, paying his bills, paying his taxes, what the hell difference does it make what he weighs? Or are you siding with the liberals that claim everyone needs to be exactly the same weight and have their preapproved income?
IMHO, I find people who judge others on their outward appearance disgusting.
Why dont you think people should be allowed to criticized for their opinions?

I don’t have a problem with that.
If someone has an opinion, they state it...if another disagrees, they state it.
I am guilty of not reading the full article.
I shot from the hip.
