Overweight has a variety of causes. Some have to do with diet; others with exercise. Viral infections have been implicated. (Don’t let yourself fall into the class of people who think it’s all a matter of willpower, and best treated by showings of disapproval.)

Belittling people for being overweight should be, well, criminal. I recommend anyone who does that be kidnapped by overweight unwashed pirates and sent to Singapore on a slow rowboat for a stern caning or two.

Overweight is a condition, probably unhealthy, like high blood pressure. It does not provide an occasion for contempt or ridicule, any more than old age, lame foot, etc., do. Aside from common decency, a good reason not to show contempt for the obese is that one risks being kidnapped by overweight pirates, rowed slowly to Singapore, and caned mercilessly. If those things aren’t a problem, then by all means feel free to show contempt for this disease or condition.

I'll defend the author's right to say what she said with my life. However, that doesn't mean that I think her article is tasteful or kind. Especially given that she struggled with anorexia. Not a small indicator of self image issues.

What passes for journalism these days is really rather disappointing. I don't understand why minimal or no talent narcissists who refer to themselves as journalists seem to think that we all should fall down in a fawning faint whenever they pontificate. Or why they seem to believe that they should be immune to any negative reaction to their insipid drivel.

When I heard what that woman said I was beyond PISSED. First she is one ugly skank and second who is she or any other person on the planet to address anyone in such a vicious manner. We all have dna we all are predisposed to illness and yes even being over weight. I used to walk three miles a day 5-6 days a week and my arthritics and fibro put me down fast. Now I walk with a cane and still am in sooo much pain when I try to just walk anywhere. We are all different people with different shapes and sizes and some of us have a soul. I have read many stories of just fibro patients who use to be joggers, worked two jobs lived a fast paced life, lived in the gym and now they can barely get out of bed. And guess what we all gained weight and with all the pain we already have then we have to add the pain of depression because of how we feel about our body image that does not fit with the cultural of the skull and crossbones stick women who are accepted. While our cultural celebrates the skull and crossbones stick figured women who then since they have no boobs have to go to the assembly lines and buy a pair of boobs to look like a woman and since they don't eat lose their hair so then they have to buy extensions to fill up their thinning hair then they have a surgeon designed big lips to have a polished look. All the while we have young girls depressed because they think they are fat but they are just children and we have more women who suffer from eating disorders. But all you hear is obesity is the cause for everything but the facts remain the same we will all get sick and we will all die. Some people have cancer run in their families and die from it and did everything right, they lived a healthy lifestyle. We have homosexuals even though they are told to have safe sex still today we have an epidemic of gay men getting aids all around the world and billions of dollars are spent trying to find a cure but no leftists, elitist, vicious ugly ass woman says anything against homosexuals since they can control their behavior. And more important why is it ok to be nasty and mean to people this woman didn't even know maybe she has issues with how she feels about herself so she then bullies others to make herself feel good.When reading comments on the internet for any given article,we have some truly hateful,angry,people with no souls.What is happening to the people in this country?? Maybe there is a dark shadow of evil that has just festered into people to make them become self-absorbed, malicious individuals who need to stand in line to have an EXORCISM! We can begin with Mr. and Mrs. self-absorbed, elitist Obama who preached to us all how to eat and then go out and eat exactly what they TOLD us we shouldn't eat, hamburgers and fries. But of course WE paid for our hamburger and fries not the hundreds of dollars an ounce beef they dined on with just their inner most friends, on the taxpayer dime.

I totally agree! I have an overweight family member that “just can’t understand” why she has so much trouble losing weight, in between daily meals of biscuits and gravy with ice cream before bed each night.

NOT a disease. A choice or weakness in her case. Medications are a different story. I’ve seen what some meds can do.
