Shirley Verrett, Opera Singer of Power and Grace, Is Dead at 79

Shirley Verrett, the vocally lustrous and dramatically compelling American opera singer who began as a mezzo-soprano and went on to sing soprano roles to international acclaim, died Friday morning at her home in Ann Arbor, Mich. She was 79.

Dame Joan Sutherland last month and now Shirley Verrett. Shame to see these ladies go. RIP.

Oh my God. I am so shocked at this. I thought she was ageless. I remember her Tosca live on PBS with Pavarotti back in the 1970s. She was absolutely awesome. I have a recording of her in Nabucco. She was a trailblazer and a great musician. She will be missed.

A few moments ago our FM station played a Verrett recording as a tribute.

The recording was an aria from one of her most notable roles, Lady Macbeth.

Her voice sent chills up and down my spine, I kid you not. She could deliver a tour de force so powerful it was almost other-worldly.

I have to track down this magnificent renditon to add to my collection.

I remember listening to her with my Aunt who loved Opera. She had a Wonderful Voice.
