(CBS) A mysterious missile launch off the southern California coast was caught by CBS affiliate KCBS's cameras Monday night, and officials are staying tight-lipped over the nature of the projectile.
CBS station KFMB put in calls to the Navy and Air Force Monday night about the striking launch off the coast of Los Angeles, which was easily visible from the coast, but the military has said nothing about the launch.
KFMB showed video of the apparent missile to former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Robert Ellsworth, who is also a former Deputy Secretary of Defense, to get his thoughts.
Scroll down for KFMB video showing the launch.

In fact there's a video of this event.
Could be DOD was trying to shoot it down above the atmosphere.
Not sure about the timing...something strange there....
I saw that video too. Not sure what to think anymore.
We're firingback? The Russians have missile carriers off our shore and they are firing back?
That would presume that "we" (meaning our leadership elite) know what this is about ~ and it ain't good.
When that thing was in the air the other day they launched all the jet fighters they've got at the base down the street ~ it's the closest one to Centreville, VA BTW.
I guess I missed the part where we launched all of our jet fighters?!
That’s because you don’t live at the end of the runway. It was UNMISTAKABLE.
Curious that this happens while the POTUS is gone for photo ops.
Wow. Now, that is worrisome!
Does look like a rocket, but looked a bit slow to me.
I’m a private pilot and native Californian watching this kind of thing a long time.
Others have said it could be an optical illusion by an airliner. Trails left by them can be quite impactful near sunset. I would bet that is what it is for now especially if it was only seen from one area.
Also many rockets stage at some point. I don’t think anyone saw a staging event.
I’ll wait for the NPR coverage
How does it work for the ADIZ? When I flew you had to have a flight plan to fly through the ADIZ (Aircraft Defense Identification Zone). I don't know if you had to be IFR or not, but I always was. Once you were IFR, ATC was supposed to keep you out of the restrictied areas, which means that no one had to know that they did really.

Proably was a Test...But of course the govvie will tell the people what they want them to know or not..
