Losing a Baby Over a Poppy Seed

The birth of a couple’s first child is supposed to be a joyous occasion -- and for the first three days, it was for Elizabeth Mort and her partner Alex Rodriguez. But then the commonwealth of Pennsylvania took their young daughter away after the hospital where she was born reported the mother for testing positive on a drug test. Her drug of choice? An “everything” bagel from Dunkin’ Donuts.

Am surprised Duncan Donuts has not been shut down and anyone else who dares to include poppy seeds in their products. It just make sense - when measured against the ever increasing, totalitarian inclinations of Liberal Government.

That aside. . .any special effects from eating a poppyseed bagel? Just wondering ;^)

I wonder if there is a relation between billing and drug testing? Why a more precise test? Can they bill these tests, and who is paying for them? Does the more precise test cost $$$? I bet it does!

And since when are they allowed to perform unauthorized tests on peoples urine? This is so wrong, on so many levels.

Have you ever eaten a Dunkin Donut? I’d take someone’s kid away if I found out they ate something from there. Someone with judgment that bad shouldn’t be endangering an innocent child. Independent donut shops rule!

Standard policy at the hospital, supposedly so they can provide care for the baby if it suffers withdrawal after birth. Not necessarily an adequate reason for giving the test, for reporting a “failure” to the goobermint, nor for having the threshold so many times lower for the woman than her employees at the goobermint would have to pass, but that’s their excuse and they’re sticking to it.

I guess because so many babies are being born addicted to drugs. Can't just single out ‘certain’ women to be tested now, can we? Equality for all.

So, they take the kid away if you test for poppy seed.

But if you KILL the baby in its' eartliest days in the womb....there's no penalty.

Abortion is a crime....it's murder...

So you know enough about them to start throwing insults from this article?

More children are born today out of wedlock then in. Don’t blame the current generation, blame their parents and those who allowed this to become to new norm.

There have been reports to show you would have to eat around 5 poppy seed bagels every day for it to show up on a test.

First, your comment is bigoted. Second, you need to read and PROCESS the whole story. This could happen to you and your family.

But if you KILL the baby in its' eartliest days in the womb....there's no penalty.

Not just the earliest days but all the way up to being born and having their heads forced to stay in the birth canal so that a scissor can be jammed into their little necks, twisted to break their spinal columns and their brains sucked out.

That is not accurate. A former co-worker of mine who definitely does NOT do drugs tested positive after having one poppy seed bagel from Dunkin Donuts just prior to having her drug screen done. I am also a Medical Laboratory Technician instructor at our local community college and some of our students are required to have drug screens in order to complete their hospital training. We ALWAYS caution them about this possibility. These tests are simply screening tests and, while accurate, can not distinguish between metabolites from poppy seeds and those from illegal drugs. My friend repeated her test and it was negative. Had the mother in question had the test repeated prior to leaving the hospital, it would most likely have been negative also.

Why was there a drug test of the mother to begin with?

I’m sure they have to report it once found. And more power to ‘em. These policies cleaned up the crack-baby epidemic after all.
