(Vanity Question) What do you do with your empty prescription bottles?
11/10/10 | Me

I just finished a round of antibiotics, and now I have an empty prescription bottle.

I was about to throw it in the trash, but then realized this bottle has my name, address, doctors name, the medication, a prescription number, and several other pieces of information (along with various barcodes) that I'm not sure could be useful to an identity thief or not.

Am I being paranoid, or is there a legitimate concern here?

Don’t have any for myself, but for my dad when he was alive; I pulled the labels off and either threw them out or recycled them for my own uses. They are great, depending on size, containers for a multitude of things.

I never put anything with my name on it in the trash. I shred papers. I use Sharpie permanent markers to blacken out my name on prescriptions, mailing labels on cardboard boxes, etc.

I donate them to charity and write them off my taxes.

Perhaps, but Googling “prescription bottle identity theft” comes up with some fairly interesting stuff.

Smash the bottle with a hammer. Mangles the hell out of the label.

Set ‘em all on top of a fence post and blast away with a 12 guage, # 8 or #9 shot recommended.

What empty bottles? Have not taken any prescription drugs since 1961.

drop the bottle in boiling water for 30 seconds - that should soften the glue and make it possible to remove the label.

Peel off the label and use them to sort and store screws, small nails, tacks, washers, etc. for the workbench.

I grind them up into a fine powder and add them to brownies, pancakes, mashed potatoes and pet food.

Nah, I’m just BS’in ya, I throw’em out when they are empty.

I used to peel and shred, but now I throw such things in the diaper trash that my 6 mo old fills. Old hard drives are a different story though - might soak them in salt water for a few weeks, degauss, and then bake at 500 F for a few hours before taking a sledgehammer to them.
