Although elephants are very unusual prey for Nile crocodiles, the 20-foot-long (6-meter-long) reptiles will occasionally ambush and take down large animals—including dozens of people annually, experts say.

Heh. Wonder if crocodiles are smart enough to think the equivalent of “Oh, crap, I didn’t expect this.”

Don’t mess with elephants. That crocodile is lucky it didn’t get stomped flat.

A similar situation must have been the inspiration of Kipling’s “Elephant’s Child” in his “Just So Stories.”

take down large animals—including dozens of people annually

So National Geographic considers people to be animals these days? Idiots.

Shame on Nat Geo - their caption says; "See which animal comes out alive" and then has no follow up and doesn't complete the story.

There is a baby in one of the pictures that ends up on the ground with the croc. I hope that didn't turn out bad for the calf.

Oh, it's pretty much a foregone conclusion which died immediately. Simple physics and an appreciation of large beasts will tell you that elephants know f=m*v. As do longhorn and angus bulls. Down in their bones.

I hope the elephant survived the infection from the bite.
