Computer: Need old Dell drivers
Little House on Unaka | November 26, 2010 | don-o

I have a Dell Dimension 4600, purchased in 2004. I was running XP Home. The boot files got corrupted and I had to reinstall - I installed XP Pro.

The network adapter is not working so I cannot get on the internet and Dell has discontinued support. Any suggestions on how I can find the driver I need?

You might find some help here at Dell's driver&downloads website.

Ask friends who have Dells if they have the recovery/device driver disks that come with the unit.

A new NIC would be like $5 from ebay.

How much is your time worth to you? Even if it’s only worth $5 an hour (I hope not), I’d say it’s worth your time to just buy the card.

Exactly what I would recommend. Done HUNDREDS of these boxes, have a cheap 3COM NIC (Network Interface Card) that XP always has drivers for.

Dell will supply DRIVERS even though SUPPORT has been DISCONTINUED.

Yes, I read the Vanity.

As you have internet connection on another machine, craigslist for old dell machines like yours? Perhaps oyu can get the driver disks? You could place a “wanted” ad out there for them.

Could also try here:

Get ahold of a USB flash drive and using the computer you’re currently sitting at, go here:

http://tinyurl.com/3a9hszj

... and download the network card driver from there to your USB flash drive. Either copy it to your hard drive and run it (recommended) or run it from the USB flash drive.

Your motherboard drivers (possibly including the network card driver) can be found here:

http://tinyurl.com/2ubvtgc

Every single driver and application for the Dell Dimension 4600 is here:

Hope this helps.

I'd go for a USB-NIC, depending on your application, say as
temporary interface to d/l fixes to say, a NIC whose drivers are
corrupted.

It's really handy to have for a quick interface that you can delete the
reference to afterward.

I did the tinyurl version of that because I’m never sure how these message boards will parse big URLs.

I've got a 4600 also, and have never had trouble getting the drivers. The tinyurl OP put up has all you need, and XP & XP Pro use the same drivers. If all else fails, send me a PM, and I'll email you the drivers you need.

IIRC, Dell will sell you a set of restore disk for about $10 plus shipping, as well.

Thank you very much. The odd thing is, you directed me to Dell sites to get those files. Couple hours ago, a Dell rep said I was outta luck unless I wanted to cough up some $$$.
