The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday morning that actors James Franco and Anne Hathaway will host the 83rd annual Oscar telecast Feb. 27 on ABC -- a move that certainly seems designed to help the academy achieve its long-held goal of attracting a younger viewing audience.

The 32-year-old Franco is currently receiving rave reviews for his work in Danny Boyle's "127 Hours" and the 28-year-old Hathaway, currently starring in the new romantic drama "Love & Other Drugs," earned a best actress nomination for 2008's "Rachel Getting Married."

"James Franco and Anne Hathaway personify the next generation of Hollywood icons -- fresh, exciting and multi-talented," said telecast producers Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer in a statement Monday morning. "We hope to create an Oscar broadcast that will both showcase their incredible talents and entertain the world on Feb. 27. We are completely thrilled that James and Anne will be joining forces with our brilliant creative team to do just that."

In recent years, Oscar hosts traditionally have been comics -- Billy Crystal, David Letterman, Whoopi Goldberg, Steve Martin, Chris Rock, Jon Stewart and Ellen DeGeneres all have hosted the ceremony.

Franco's hosting assignment will mark his second appearance on the Oscar telecast; Hathaway will be making her fifth appearance. During the 2009 ceremony, the actress performed a comedic musical number with host Hugh Jackman.

To: who knows what evil?

Most Oscars go to technicians. It’s their only time in the spotlight and they deserve it.

isn’t she another closet homosexual? (all that scandal with some co-star?) (oh and seriously bride wars? a movie about two brides? very inuendo)

Perhaps there should be some sort of “straight” counter programing on another channel ala the superbowl half time shows.
